Exactly so we would not only be paying more for gas because someone wanted to increase the cost of it but we would then be paying more for goods that we buy. Surely the manufacturers and producers are going to pass along the cost to the consumers.
I have a friend who works in the trucking industry and when fuel goes up so does the price they charge, when fuel goes down so does the price they charge. They deal with transporting steel so I'm sure that gets factored into the cost of steel at some point.
Actually, thanks goes to the USA voters who elected our leaders into office. As Pogo once said, "We have met the enemy and it is us."

You think globally traded oil prices would somehow be different if G.W. was not in office? We'd be using less fuel in the US? We'd have fuel cell vehicles?

Everything that uses gas should be more expensive. A gas tax would most likely go towards increasing the subsidy for public transportation. Transport costs would go up - this increases the tendency to buy local products.
You can make an argument that it will hurt the poor. Well everything hurts the poor. Sorry - that is no argument.
No democratic candidate for president has said anything meaningful regarding global warming - a lot of hand waving but no carbon tax - the most logical attempt to improve the situation. So really - it is not GWB's fault - it is America's fault.

Right you are. MANY other nations artificially inflate the price of gas, and with pretty good results. That extra money raised could be used for ANYTHING, including relieving certain hardships of the poor. Subsidizing public transportation, for instance, as you stated. Desiring cheap gas, and using the poor as a reason for it, is short-sighted. There's always a way to make it work. Transporting our goods all over the country only makes sense (and is only still done voraciously) BECAUSE our gas is so cheap. Raise the gas-price; you'll see manufacturers cope, and/or raise prices, or build facilities closer to their customers.
Our transportation-of-goods gas usage is atrocious. It is not something to be condoned. It is something (one of many things) that need improved.

Artificially raising the cost of something to help out some other problem only enables the problem to continueinstead of rectifying the problem. (I deleted the sentence here because 1. I didn't want to spark another debate/arguement and 2. I didn't want to go off topic).
