In Europe the Echo is called the Yaris. In Japan, the Vitz. Same car, different name. NOTE: Toyota achieved 55 *without* hybridization. They just used a tiny efficient engine & an idle-stop function (similar to VW's Lupo). Impressive!

[Japan Test = 60 MPG. -5 MPG = ~55 MPG estimate in U.S.]

[UK Test = 4.1L/100km which converts to 57 MPG U.S.]

The Japanese 10/15 cycle, or whatever it's called, is a lot more conservative than the US EPA's City/Highway cycle. This is largely to account for how small and slow most roads are in Japan, and thus the lower speeds and rates of accelleration. It's unlikely the Vitz would ever score such numbers on the current EPA test. It's still encouraging to see them implementing fuel-saving techniques on the non-hybrids though. Auto-stop could be a good way to get people on a transitional path towards accepting hybrids in the future.

This must be the same car that is being marketed by Toyota in Europe as the Aygo (pronounced I-go) which has been jointly developed and is also available under different guises from CITROEN and PEUGEOT.

Diesel option coming soon!

More HERE and HERE.

Troy, where did you find the 55 MPG Echo data? You mean the "Vitz" car? I cannot find anything on Echo that shows higher than 45 MPG......Look at the bottom story on this page, it shows 19km per liter for the Echo, which converts to about 45 MPG.....

Here is a review of the 2004 Echo Hatchback from Canada, rated at 43/55 for the manual tranny. I wonder why so much different between city and hwy ratings? I don't think I have EVER seen a rating where the City/Hwy is 12 MPG apart like this......<*confused*>

The Vitz & the Echo are the same car. It's in the *title* - "Toyota Redesigns the Vitz (Echo)"

I don't see the number 19 anywhere in that article?

The 1.0 liter version gets 25 km/liter = 60mpg u.s. I downgraded to 55, because the EPA test skews downward.

Hi Lars-ss:

___The Canadian estimates are a bit different then the US estimates which are different then the Euro estimates which are also different then the Japanese ones. Vastly different test/drive cycles and even different fuel quantities depending on which countries/continent test cycle you are looking at. The US is usually the lowest of the 4 overall and we all know how many people actually achieve the EPA estimates in the real world here in the states. Just imagine the shock some in Europe are in after hitting just 60 - 70% of the stickers estimates That is if the European car manufacturers/sales outlets are required by law to display the estimated Urban/Extra-Urban on new cars vs. the mandated Mulroney sticker as seen on every new vehicle sold here in the US?

___I wonder if the European or Japanese new cars have to display an information sticker like here in the US and Canada? Are there any Euro or Japanese members who can shed some light on this question?

___Thanks in advance.

Imagine the mileage it would get if they hybridized it. I'm not saying that all cars should be hybridized - this Echo surely has a cleaner carbon balance than a comparable Hybrid Echo would, because it's already at such high FE. Still, it's fun to imagine that an HSD version of this Echo could push the envelope even more, maybe closer to Insight territory.

Take the time to read all three paragraphs of the article. According to Toyota, the redesign has improved FE by 8.5%.

Posting Japanese MPG testing figures out of context is pretty much useless. The Prius scores around 75 MPG on that test.

Lastly, there are engines from 1.0 to 1.5 Litres put in this car. Which one are you talking about ?

R2-E2

Highway/City/Husband/Wife MPG: 56.5, as of 12/2005, 26K miles

2004."

I don't know why some people are being so hateful towards this New Echo/Vitz car??? A car that get 55 MPG is a *good thing*. Be positive!
