Re: Turbo'd Prius
Interesting, but too bad it's a Japan gen 1 Prius, those things were terrible in the power department to begin with, and the turbo doesn't even bring it close to the Prius II performance specs, and most of it's enhancements came in the form of a much bigger traction electric motor and a higher speed generator with marginal ICE power improvements.
Another Prius got tricked out to go fast, but I doubt it's very good at cornering!

Re: Turbo'd Prius
yes, that's the car and driver sponsored prius II
to back you up, here's a statement from the toyota website regarding this car:

as for the turbo'd prius, well, I respect that person's work and effort put into turbo modifications.

Re: Turbo'd Prius
Interesting articles. But it leaves one very important and unanswered question: What was their FE?
The fact it was a somewhat stock Pruis is impressive. So how long before Honda drags out a modified HAH and goes 180....

Re: Turbo'd Prius
Tim, you do know someone Turboed an Insight right? No reason you can't turbo a HAH or a civic for that matter.

Re: Turbo'd Prius
Tbaleno,
I've read that here and there on the different boards. Very interesting proposition. Were there any conclusions on impact to FE good or bad?
I was sort of poking a bit of fun about the HAH. Think back to other threads on "is it a waste to have hybrid technology only be used for battery-powered turbo chargers for already high performance cars...". Setting speed records is fun and an interesting application, but it certainly leans toward the "how can we make a fast car faster using hybrid technology" rather than "how can we become more efficient and use less fuel". A hybrid dragster is interesting, but if it gets 8 MPG than it's only for entertainment value in my mind.

Re: Turbo'd Prius
Why are we so concerned about mileage? Wouldnt you be willing to sacrifice a few mpg for some more stomp?

We are concerned with mileage because we don't like sponsoring terrorism!

Re: Turbo'd Prius
Some folks are enthusiastic about getting their toys to perform more efficiently than anyone else's. Others have the same enthusiasm abut getting their toys to perform faster or more powerfully than anyone else's. Still others want to have their cake and eat it, too.
We as a whole need people on all ends of the spectrum to keep pushing the limits and innovating, whether that innovation results in 2 more HP or 2 more MPG. It all adds up to a more complete picture of exactly what is possible. And in that light, we are all after the same goal- pushing the limits of engineering- only in the way that we prefer.
There's a time and a need for raw power, and a time and a need for efficiency.
It's pointless for a MPG guy to try to evangelize a HP guy, and vice versa. The 'true believers' on either end will never be swayed- why try? It's like trying to get Nader to agree with Cheney, or Gates with Torvaldis.
PS- you'll notice my car...nicely straddling the fence. Better EPA MPG than any US car built today, and better performance than most of them, too. I've owned rice-burners that got 40+ even when driving like a crazed teenager, and I've owned '69 Mach 1s that I couldn't even begin to determine mileage on. And I've loved every one of them for what it was. Sometimes I want to stomp and hear pipes sing, other times I want to tread lightly.
