Well, my first car was a 1990 Toyota Corrola special edition (there was nothing special about that car.... <_< ).

Automatic 3 speeds (my parents bought it new in 90), that meant at legal limit (100 kilometers per hour), no more kick down.

It handled very bad, suspension so soft...and going too fast on a small road, I turned it over real good.

Not a scratch on me, but the car was totalled....

My mother gave me this Toyota to get into a 1999.5 VW 2 doors Golf TDI automatic.

What a world of difference!

It handled well, had unbelievable torque (compared to the Corolla) and twice the fuel economy (from 500 km per tank on the Corolla to 1000 km per tank on the Golf).

My father had a GMC Vandura 1500 for 14 years when he bought a brand new 2000 GMC Sierra, extented cab, short bed, manual tranny (that's pretty rare to get it standard on the half ton models).

He gets around 20 mpg on highway with the 4.8 litre V8. That's honorable for a truck this big.

Finally, in 2003 I got my Passat Variant TDI.

After 3 years in a BMW (Bus Metro Walking), it was nice to have a very unique and distinctive vehicule (one of 1500 made for Canada).

I have a 2883 Insight. I own the car because of the super high fuel economy, I average 86.2 mpg. To me it creates a FREEDOM of being able to take off on a long highway trip, and not even need to consider to cost, in terms of fuel.
The other reason I own it is because it has a beautiful, streamlined shape. I keep the car highly polished and have displayed it at 21 weekend car shows around the NW US. I have won several trophies; but mainly I enjoy meeting lots of nice people and explaining the features and capabilities of the car. I am a true Insight NUT. On many trips, I can average well over 90 mpg, then come home and change my oil with only 2.6 qts! Amazing.........Billy

oh i'm not implying that you can't take any car to another country, he wants to take the golf specifically because he believes that it will be functional, easy to drive in the city, etc.

04 HCH Manual for me and a 01 Tahoe for my wife. Yeah I know it's an SUV but it sure is nice on long trips. I'll never buy another one but I will check out the Hybrid Highlander or the Hybrid Lexus when we get rid of it in a couple of years.

We have 3 vehicles (4 if you include the diesel John Deere tractor, but it doesn't get out on the road very often).

The 1992 Honda Civic CX hatchback is my main commuting vehicle (110 mile round trip commute) and is my main driving around car. Its full depth hatchback design gives it the room to carry my dogs (2 Irish wolfhounds and 2 border collies) for hiking trips. I also use it to carry sacks of animal feed from the farm supply store so I can save having to use my gas guzzling pickup for these trips. It gives me mid 50's MPG in the summer and mid to high 40's MPG in the winter.

1997 Ford 150 4X4 is my farm truck and is used to haul hay bales, rolls of fencing, and the stock trailer. Mileage has ranged from 15 to 26 MPG depending on the use to which I have put it (15MPG pulling the trailer, 26MPG driving around with minor loads (a few rolls of fencing, feed sacks, etc.).

The 2002 Honda Odyssey is my wife's car. It gives me 27MPG on the few times when I drive it.

As far as a replacement car for my Civic, I keep watching and waiting for another new car (hybrid or not) to be available for sale in the US that matches the mileage combined with load carrying ability of my Civic hatch. Every model that has come out so far that meets my mileage requirement (50MPG on the highway) doesn't meet my load requirements (ability to carry 2 large dogs or 12 sacks of feed in the back with the seats down). Of all of the high MPG cars currently for sale (Insight, PriusII, CHC, PriusI), none of them have the room to carry the loads that my Civic hatch has been carriying for the past 12 years. The VW Golf TDI would be a contender if its reliability ratings were better and if the local VW dealership inspired more confidence. The Ford Focus, Honda Civic Si, and Scion Xa hatches could carry the load, but get abysmal mileage. At this point, the best bet coming down the pike looks to be the Honda Fit when it arrives in a year or two, assuming of course that they sell it in a version tilted towards high mileage rather than high power.

But the Prius II has more carrying capacity than a Golf TDI
