Who is the best current hybrid hypermiler? Now taking nominations:
Who is the best current hybrid hypermiler?
I know the first person many will think of and I'm going to suggest that Wayne be disqualified for the following reasons:
1) Wayne does not currently own a hybrid.
Wayne started out with an Insight and he got fantastic mileage with said car (he was my hero!). Then he sold it and got a non-hybrid Accord. He could have purchased another hybrid and kept getting mileage in the 90ies but instead he chose a more comfortable non-hybrid car and now he is "only" in the fifties. Sure he could do better if he had a different car but that is exactly my point. He doesn't have a different car!

I'm concerned with this, partialy because it needlessly rehashes some elements of a recently troublesome thread.

How about listing the top entries for each model from the database?
Toyota Prius I (THS) NHW11+NHW10 models:
Hypermiler philmcgreen philmcneal 56.0 57,426 57,000 1
Hypermiler 99NHW10 fuji 55.8 11,782 0 19

Why don't we see how this goes? I'll keep an eye on it. If another mod or admin thinks it will be too much trouble they are welcome to close the thread.
Everybody please be nice in the way you express your opinions. Do not attack other members.
This site is after all Green Hybrid so I think it is reasonable that our nomonations include only hybrid drivers.

Re: Who is the best current hybrid hypermiler? Now taking nominations:
Bogus thread. What's the obsession with classifying things as "best"? Hybrids aren't the best choice for everyone -- my husband had to trade his hybrid in to get a car that can carry his gear, for example. It's not our business to judge people for making choices that are right for them. There's no best hybrid, no best pizza, no best actress; there will always be people who feel differently. Instead of knocking someone down, how about letting other options stand on their own merits?
It's kind of ironic that you'd say "do not attack other members" when you spend most of your first post putting down another member. :-)
If you want to start a useful thread, let's include other heroes too. Where's the award for driving fewer miles and using your bike more? That uses even LESS gasoline. The award for carpooling? That takes another car off the road completely, to and from work, 5x a week. How do you figure the fuel efficiency -- and the bragging rights -- for *that* driver?
Just my 2¢. :-)
peace,
Linda

Re: Who is the best current hybrid hypermiler? Now taking nominations:
I started this thread for dual reasons. For one I'd like to see some of the better hybrid drivers get some recognition. The second reason is to give Wayne a little well intentioned ribbing but in a totally friendly and truthful way.
I don't see why telling the truth is considered putting someone down. Did I say something inaccurate?
As far as including the best bicycle rider and the like, well once again this is GreenHybrid. I'm sure there are other sites for non-hybrid vehicles and for people who ride bikes etc. Our focus is hybrids so I don't think it is at all strange to include only hybrid drivers...
Actually nothing is stoping another member from starting a non-hybrid driver thread or even a bicycle riding thread.

Re: Who is the best current hybrid hypermiler? Now taking nominations:
Just listing the top entries isn't enough. Take philmcneal. He posted a starting mileage of 57,000 miles and 56 mpg. Then, in November 2006, he posted 426 miles at 54 mpg. And nothing since. So his numbers are skewed.
I think it would be very difficult to determine an acutal hypermiler per model because of the variations in the entered data. I'd have to set up some criteria to choose the top three. These are just thoughts of mine, so please don't anyone get offended.
Fuji has 19 tanks over 11,782 and is sitting at 55.8. I'd probably say he's the top dog.
Next in the database is sofia. But, that user has only posted a starting mileage at 90K and 55 mpg. Accurate? Maybe, but how do we know? So because I don't know the true history of those tanks, I'd skip over sofia and go down the line. Again, nothing personal. Just that there's neither any tank history, nor posted tanks since adding to the database.
I'd also eliminate those who hasn't posted a tank in over 90 days. So JT_OHIO would be out.
For me, my top three would be:
1) fuji
2) rick reece
3) bwilson4web

Re: Who is the best current hybrid hypermiler? Now taking nominations:
Oh, one more thing I considered. It's easy to get high FE for one tank. And if that's the only tank you post, then your name will be at the top of the list. So maybe members that have held a high tank average over a longer distance should be weighted more heavily?
Say, 60 mpg for 500 miles versus 57 mpg for 90K miles? I'd say the 57 mpg driver is top dog.

Public ribbing without being clear on that is really hard to pull off. Your post doesn't read as if you're having fun, it reads as if you have a bone to pick.
No problem with recognizing other drivers. Why not just start out listing the criteria -- must own a hybrid -- rather than spending almost the whole post citing reasonsn for excluding a non-hybrid owner? Why mention the non-hybrid owners if they don't qualify?

I personally know a hybrid owner who rides her bike whenever she can. She's getting even better MPG by not using her car! I also know a hybrid owner who carpools whenever he can. He's removed a non-hybrid from the road *many* days of the year. How do we quantify them? They are definitely using less gas -- and they are hybrid owners.
:-) Just a little friendly ribbing. Right?
