Default Who needs a hybrid when...

...there's this option! www.fuelvaporcar.com

Actually it's not an option quite yet but I'll be trading in my Camry Hybrid when they become available. They are reducing CO2 and NOX emissions by 80% or more with a stock Honda engine. This is the kind of technology that I think really holds promise...not hybrid cars that get 30-40 mpg. Although I love driving my Hybrid I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed with how conservatively it used the electric motor.

You realize why that thing [supposedly] gets 92mpg and your TCH gets 40mpg, right? A TCH is a 3,000lb+ midsize sedan. Lots of weight, plenty of aerodynamic drag. It's nothing like the vehicle on that page, which appears to be glorified motorcycle with full fairing. Not much weight and probably very little aerodynamic drag. If a 5-speed Insight can get 100mpg in the right hands (which it can) it's no wonder that thing can do 92. Which is not to say I necessarily believe the claims on the page in the first place, but it doesn't take a giant leap in technology to make a fuel efficient 1-seat vehicle.

Not to mention that a three wheeled vehicle is not the most stabil thing to be driving in at highway speeds. One little glitch with that back wheel and its all over. Looks cool but I'll take 4 wheels, thanks.

Or they could make that car a hybrid, and then it would get 110+ mpg, or something like that. Just a thought.

That is on cool looking car but I think they are full of crap with some of their claims. For example typical skidpad numbers range from 0.62 (HUMMER) to 0.96 (Viper), they are claiming 1.7 which I highly doubt.

Haha. This car always gets discussion going. Yes of course the reason it gets 92 mpg is that it's a small (actually a two-seater), light, highly aerodynamic commuter car. And yes it has been locally track tested and corners and accelerates wayyyy better than your typical high performance car. I can't comment on the inherent stability in a 3 wheel design. The really exciting thing about it though is that in developing their fuel vapor technology they discovered that although the mileage didn't increase all that much, the emissions dropped something like 80%. The engine is a modified off-the-shelf Honda engine that, if you put it back into a Honda, would get slightly better mileage than one with a stock engine but would emit 80% less CO2 and NOX. Now THAT is a significant development if you ask me because it doesn't rely on developing an infrastructure of hydrogen filling stations or expensive battery technology. Chip Foose and Jay Leno both saw the car at the SEMA show and both chose it as the most exciting car at the show. I'm a sceptical sort myself but I think it's important to keep an open mind when considering technologies that can potentially help solve the problems of emissions and climate change.
