[quote=valerieannt;171006]OK I have a good laugh for everyone.

Hybrids are SO MUCH more expensive too. Well, OK, let's make a comparison- large SUV $35-40K plus the $500 plus a month gas fee OR a loaded Toyota Prius around 26K with about $35 a month.

This English major has just flunked her math exam. Can you document the monthly gas difference?

2005 AWD Escape Hybrid
Best tank trip MPG 39.02 (scangauge II) for 402 miles on I-70, 10.3 gallons used over mostly flat terrain.

Best tank trip MPG 34.6 for E30 for 271 miles along I-80 in Indiana and Ohio.

O.K. so the poster was a little off math wise, but in real math it is not that far off when you reverse the anti hybrid FUD onto gas guzzlers, for instance....35/$3.60=9.72 galsX50 mpg = 486.11 miles driven...486.11/10mpg for the suv X $3.60 = $174.99 for the same distance.....in other words, the SUV costs about 5 times more fuel to go the same distance as a hybrid.....might as well be $500...and well may soon be.

The other math was that the SUV costs about $10,000 more than the Hybrid mentioned ($15,000 more than my HCH) one of the things I at least as a Hybrid owner hear frequently is "when will it pay for itself in gas" My question to the SUV owner is, so, when will it pay for itself?

Granted, you have an escape SUV, it is the only SUV that makes any sense, however, since they are impossible to get in this part of the country, they may as well not even make them...

Just the facts please: there is no 2008 vehicle that is rated at 50mpg via the EPA. There is no $35-$40,000 large SUV that is rated at 10-11mpg.

My best vehicle uses no gas at all--my Cannondale Bicycle!

And yet, in spite of their ratings there are plenty of hybrid drivers that get in excess of 50 mpg and there are Hummer drivers getting 8 mpg, and Durango drivers that get 9 or 10 mpg I have co workers that have them.
So, regardless of your adherence to epa ratings mileage may vary.

Yes, I know of local Prius drivers that only average in the 30's. Mileage can go either way, not just upward for hybrid vehicles.

I'm getting 670-730 mile tanks, over 60MPG. My average last winter was about 58MPG.

I paid about $1,000 over the price of a comparatively loaded Civic EX.
I was concerned price might reach $2 over the life of the car. (My 1st gas receipt is $1.24/g)
Quite a bit of savings there.
An aquaintence co worker overheard me talking to another fellow reporting my +60MPG tanks. He shockingly commented that hybrids only have advantage in stop/go city driving, and here I am commuting 50 miles to work on the freeway. He was completely dumb-founded.

But what truly amazes me is the number of drivers who don't realize the fuel savings they could have, if only they were willing to learn more efficient driving with only minor modifications to their current habits. Many regular gasser drivers could beat the pants off a careless hybrid regading efficiency. I definetly see a slow-down in general traffic. That's a start.

Efficient drivers do it better.
1003 miles a tank personal record. 74MPG calculated. HCH1 CVT

I'm amazed that people care what others think. Let them be ignorant and laugh all the way to the bank. I always do a double take when I arrive at a gas station and see the price of the last person's purchase. We are talking plus $100 fill ups. That always gets a chuckle out of me.

Me too! I can't help but do the mental math for my old Tundra each time I fill up. It typically goes something like this: ... ah lets see, 602 miles, thats about a tank-and-two-thirds for the Tundra .. say 34 gals, and gas is currently 3.61, so thats ...about 18 MPG, (sounds about right!) and about 20 cents-a-mile. I went 602 in the TCH and bought 13.4 gallons, so thats... 44.9 MPG (at least, in the summer) or about ....08 cents per gallon <giggle>,<giggle>, ,<giggle>.

I just can't help it.

It is the ignorant among us that will eventually destroy us all.

Yes Bill, you are right, Mileage can be less than epa ratings. I tried to do some research and could not find the epa ratings on a lot of suv's because, they are rated as trucks and don't have to supply them....go figure.
I went to consumer reports and found some intersting #'s....BTW, I only look at city #'s as 96% of my dirving is in the city.

Durango 8/13
Aspen 8/20
tahoe 9/19
armada 9/19
Navigator 8/18
Hummer H3(small?) 10/20
Xterra 12/23
Escape 13/26
BMW X5 12/22

Granted, they drive these cars hard, and driven as carefuly as most people drive a hybrid they would probably get better mileage say 20% which would bring the Durango or aspen all the way up to 9.6 mpg. I have found a lot of people with the large engine push it hard because they can and, well it is fun.

So, Lets say that same person gets 30 mpg from a Hybrid, I have found many people with hybrids nurse it along for the best mpg, cause, well they can and, it is fun. Which is going to have a lower fuel cost per year?

.

People are clueless about hybrids because they are stupid. Even some hybrid owners don't know fundamental things about their own cars nor the society, its technology and economy which supports their stupid asses.

And they are lazy, too. WILLFULLY lazy, because it is easier to be cynical and tell oneself that there are NO answers instead of LEARNING about reality and some of the things that are actually within one's power to do to cope. Far easier to just blame.
