Re: Will the HCHII catch the PriusII?
No doubt it will loose a little over the winter, but the summer numbers are looking very good!

Re: Will the HCHII catch the PriusII?
I've been following the mpg for Civics and the Prius 2 and I think you Gen 2 Civic drivers just lost a tenth while the Prius picked up a tenth. I wonder if historical info is available? Right now the HCH 2 is at 46.8/46.2 median/mean while the Prius 2 is at 47.6/47.6....
I don't think that the HCH 2 is ever going to catch the Prius 2.

I think the Gen 2 just lost a tenth partially because somebody added a 1.6mpg tank. Does somebody periodically weed out these entries that are obviously in error. After watching the numbers for several months now, I also have serious doubts that the HCH2 will catch the Prius 2 in FE in the database.
Oh well.

i don't think the 1.6mpg had any meaningful affect on the hch.ii database. it was only calculated for 13 miles.

The average is not weighted based upon miles driven. The fuel economy of every entry is equally weighted regardless of the number of miles driven.

Re: Will the HCHII catch the PriusII?
OK, so just for fun.
I took the difference from start to current miles as the miles recorded. Only used entries that had 2000 or more recorded miles.
Calculated the total gas used for each entry by dividing the miles recorded by the avg gas milage listed.
Seemingly there were no invlaid entries with abvious errors, like 2 MPG, etc.
Summed all the miles recorded and gas used for valid entries and did the quick avg MPG calculation.
HCHII CVT
170 entries used according to rules above
1,120,679 total miles
23,373 total gal
47.9 MPG avg
Prius II
457 entries used per rules
4,742,127 total miles
97,163 total gal
48.8 MPG avg

Since you already have some data worked up, could you also do a quick calculation where you average the drivers fuel economy (but still do not include those that have less than 2000 miles)? To clarify, I would like to see what the numbers would be if you sum the fuel economy of every entry and divide by the total number of entries. It will be interesting to see if that gives similar numbers.
Thanks.

Our cars might be closer than we think although we can't prove it. A neighbor in San Pedro tells me that their Prius display calculates mpg to high compared to manually. Our HCH II do the exact opposite and calculate to low. If the display numbers are entered in the database for each car then it would be alot closer. Normally with my car there is a difference of about 2.5mpg. This could be the difference just a thought.
My other half states that she would buy a HCH II because the EPA vs actual is closer to what is advertised. According to EPA the Prius should be at 55.5mpg while the HCH II should be at 50mpg.(As she looks over my shoulder)

We have a provision for members to indicate which method they use when posting tank data. I use the lower "calculated at the pump" figures which is indicated in the database on the lower right by this:
Calculation Method: By Hand
If you get really bored you could test your theory by checking the percentage of members in each group that use each method.

If I do the avg of the ones that qualify according to the rules laid out above.
HCHII CVT 47.9
PriusII 48.3
I don't think there will be much difference between the 2 unless you drive a lot of bumper to bumper traffic. But I guess time will tell. Lets see when there are more HCHII datapoints that are useful.
