Well I for one am rooting for the comeback of the domestic autos. The continued loss of revenue and assembly line closures are disconcerting.

Over the last 30 years of so I've owned about 17 cars. Most were domestics but I remember a '74 (I think) Corolla wagon. It had around 100K miles when the front fender rusted off: I had to stop on the freeway to recover it from the ditch on I-35W through Minneapolis. I retired it at around 120K miles. In it's life I had to replace voltage regulator, alternator, starter, distributor, clutch,cl utch cable, links, etc etc

By far the most beautiful car I've ever owned was a '59 Olds 98, followed with a '65 Pontiac Catalina and '65 Chev Biscayne (an un-trimmed Impalla).

Toughest car I've owned was '69 Plymouth Fury III w/318 V8. Despite my deliberate assault as a teen the car just wouldn't die.

Most fun car was a 78 (I think) Plymouth Fire Arrow. I heard the engine was Mitsubishi but I didn't care. It was simply a rocket and I loved it.

Surely all the old domestics I've had required less repairs, were most beautiful (Except the 80's era) than the foreign counterparts. Maybe I was just lucky. I did all the repairs myself. (Back in the carburator and breaker point, timing light days)

Today I absolutely LOVE the new Malibu and Impalla's appearance. Granted beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the interior of these cars are just 100% first class.
The foreign cars are nice ... just not the same careful and detailed styling of the new domestics- especially the GM and Chrysler products.

I've read many articles which say the "big 3" products are now about the same as foreign cars regarding dependability-
If that Malibu or Impalla got 50MPG instead of 30 ... I'd buy one this afternoon.

Heck, if they just got 40+ MPG, there would be lines at the dealer.

Many of us don't hate domestic automakers. We just hate some of the things they are doing, or NOT doing.
I also don't like that they make cars for the European market that get better gas mileage than the models they offer here in the states.
My '91 Olds gets about 19 city, and some unbelievably good highway mileage (30-40, depending on the trip and driving techniques used). That's why we still have it, as well as it being a good-looking and very reliable car. I have no intention of buying another domestic car until they produce one that gets better mileage than a car they built 17 years ago. I don't think that is too much to ask of a car maker...to improve with time.
While I wait for that to happen, I bought the HCH, and I like this car very much.
I also liked my 1967 Plymouth Fury II w/318 V8, but these are different times and I have different priorities. (Loved the dashboard in that thing.)

Ahh yes. It was a time when even dashboards had real, chromed trim and not just shiny silver plastic.

But, I guess I'll have to save that for another thread.

Gairwyn, here's my response when Clett asked the same question 1 year and 2 days ago.

The Precept was never intended to go into production. Typically there are two types of "concept vehicles" on the auto show circuit. Some are showcases of potential design directions or potential technology directions. The Buick Bengal shown at the 2003 North American International Auto Show is an example of a concept vehicle that was never really intended for production, but which signalled styling cues for where Buick, as a brand might be going.

The Precept shown in 2000 was also never really considered for production, but was more of a learning vehicle to understand what it took to design, engineer, develop, and manufacture a hybrid vehicle. Much of what was learned from building this show car has been injected into the development of hybrid vehicles that will see production.

The second type of "concept vehicle" are those that are actually targeted for production, such as the 2002 Pontiac Solstice concept Even in the case of "production intent" concepts, there are usually changes made from the original concept to facilitate manufacturing or to reduce the overall cost at production volumes, or to take advantage of changes in design thought or technical content that can occur from concept (2002 for Solstice) to production (2005).

So when you see a "concept vehicle" at an auto show, how do you know it is planned for production? You don't unless someone in a leadership capacity announces that it will (for example, Rick Wagoner announcing the Saturn VUE Plug-In). An indicator that it is at least being considered for production is if the concept vehicle appears in multiple years with evolutionary changes. Here's the 2003 Solstice concept. A lot closer to the actual car available today.

Peace,

Martin

I would also add that the Precept vehicle still exists and is used as a learning vehicle.

Thanks, Martin.
I was looking up something totally different today, and my google search came up with the Precept, which I'd never heard of before.

Hi,

I don't think it matters whether the Volt is called a series hybrid or an electric car with a range extender. What matters is the CARB classification since that dictates how many clean car credits GM gets.

Personally, I hope the CARB decides each one sold is the same as a fool cell car. That would solve a lot of problems, real quickly.
