Question Which would be your choice for a new car?

The wife's 1999 Acura TL is still doing fine, but she is starting to talk about what kind of car she would like to replace it with, when the time comes.
We started talking about it this weekend, and even went browse the local car lots on Sunday (when those pesky salespeople are all gone).

So, the question is: What car would make a good replacement?

Things she has to have:
  • 4 doors<
  • Navigation System<
  • Reliable all the time<
  • Better fuel mileage than the TL (19-29 mpg)<
  • similar comfort of the TL (a "road car") <
It would be nice if it didn't require premium fuel, which adds to the cost of operating the TL.

Any suggestions?

Well, the 06' Civic seems to match up to your list (though one could argue about the reliable all the time issue because of the glitches in the first year run of the car).

Rent each candidate car and drive it around for two or three days. Write up your notes and make sure all cars are tested. Then you'll be able to make an informed decision.

I'd try a Honda Accord Hybrid. Since sales of that vehicle have been fairly weak, you might get a good deal.

I just bought an '06 Prius four days ago...and I struggled with the decision. My last car was a 1994 Honda Civic EX (before that was a 1988 Honda Civic LX and a 1983 VW Rabbit).

I started looking at hybrids when the Honda Insight first came out...and I've been lusting after them ever since! Finally, when my Honda started showing enough wear (a wee bit of rust) to warrant a new car, I had to make the decision.

The Insight finally got knocked out of the running because I couldn't get past the thought that I would regret a two-seater sometime down the line.

The Accord Hybrid was never in the running because of the price.

That left the Civic Hybrid v. the Prius. The Prius won for the following reasons...

- I liked the display better and the location of the controls
- I LOVE the hatchback (I've missed having one ever since I got rid of my Rabbit)
- Safety information I found indicated the Prius was a bit better
- Prius had slightly better gas mileage
- Prius was identifiable as Prius from a distance (unique look)
- Sitting position is higher in the Prius (for once, I don't need a pillow!)
- '06 Civic colors choices, in my opinion, suck. LOL

"Safety information I found indicated the Prius was a bit better"

Which information was that? I had only seen the Gold IIHS rating and the front/offset/side/rear ratings for the 06 Civic. Haven't seen the complete ratings or any IIHS ratings on Prius. Historically the Prius has done well (with side curtains and active head restraint) but I see no evidence it is "safer" in the 2006 model year.

Very well said!

However not to sound like anyone is shoving a certain make/model down your throat, I would check out the pros/cons to each vehicle. and if it is possible do what bwilson said below.

bwilson4web states:

Good luck!

I liked the fact that the Prius had traction control as a standard feature and vehicle stability control as an available option (which I chose to include in my option package). It was my understanding that these were not available, either standard or as an additional option, on the Civic.
