XM came with my dearly departed Honda Element, which had an XM antenna on the roof. Never had an issue with reception with it, with the exception of a brief blip under overpasses.
I now have an XM Roady for my new Civic which I like, and just have the antenna laying on the dashboard. I have had a few occasional moments of static during some snowstorms the past few weeks, but otherwise is has been excellent. When I did get the static, it was just a few seconds here or there. I suspect that If I were to mount the antenna permanently on the roof as recommended, reception would be better. I have also noticed the occasional static while passing tall buildings in downtown Indianapolis.... again I did not have this problem with the permanent antenna on the Element. I have never had issues with simple cloud cover though.
