Re: You know you're a real hybrid owner when...
I have some quick questions about how the average miles per gallon works (on the Prius), because they've been nagging at my brain since I first explored and discovered all of the neat new toy features of the car.
First, does being stopped at a light, and not actually going anywhere, decrease the reported gas mileage? Because I know that I get above my given mileage (yes, I'm just that fanatical about it, give me a break, it's a new toy!), and one major culprit seems to be the fact that when driving around town, and using only electric power (manually, not with the mod that makes it so), the average miles per gallon is lower, because any time I'm completely stopped, the miles per gallon hits zero. At some lights, this significantly sucks away at my average over the five minute increments.
The way I figure, it figures out the time by saying "Miles/Hour" divided by 'gallons/hour' gives miles per gallon(instantaneous), and average miles per gallon is just the integral of that graph (m/g/time), divided by total time. I know that the division by zero when speed is not equal to 0 also skews the average somewhat, but I am curious as to how much.
Any thoughts?
