Default Nissan targeting Sales of 50,000 Altima Hybrids per Year

Quote:
Auto Week reports that Nissan is targeting sales of 50,000 Altima hybrids per year, starting next year with US production of the car.

Nissan unveiled its 2007 Altima hybrid prototype in June 2004. The company is partnering with archrival Toyota for the hybrid system components, combining those with Nissan’s own four-cylinder gasoline engine technology.

I have a friend that works at the Nissan proving grounds here in Arizona. He keeps telling me how cool the new Altima hybrid is supposed to be, and what an improvement it is over the FE of the Altima 2.5. Unfortunately he won't give me any hints as to if it's at the super FE range, like the Civic/Prius, or if it's intended to go head to head with the Accord and Camry hybrids. I'll keep trying, but I think he enjoys the whole "if I told you, I'd have to kill you" thing!

The 2.5 is a fun and powerful engine, but it's a bit of a guzzler. Will be very interesting to see what they can coax out of it.

My guess would be that it would perform (FE wise) a little better than the Honda Accord. But that is just my gut feeling.

Well the estimate on one of the other threads about tax credits showed the Altima predicted at 32mpg. I have no idea where that number came from since I believe it's still a good 12+ months away from production, but that would put it a little above the Accord Hybrid. Since the 2.5's rated at 175hp and they're using Toyota-licenced technology, we might see perhaps 200 horsepower for the Altima Hybrid. This would be Acura TSX-like horsepower with 40% better fuel economy.
