They have used 22.5L/45L to travel 1006.62km as reported by the SuperMID in the 5 shifts so far, that is if all 45L can actually be used, so they are around half way. Insanity!

117.6 mpg would be a 2 Litre (per 100 Km) car. Imagine that.

Off hand, I'd say Wayne's remark was either meant to deflect further questions, or was alluding to the PR duties that the group has become beset by, and Dave's aplomb in handling that sort of thing.
