Question The most confusing tank ever

I've been averaging mid-low 60's MPG lately and have somewhat modified the my route I drive for better FE as well as some technique changes, mostly slower accelerations.

YesterdayI refueled within 500feet of the last bar dissappearing.
I've noticed my car usually has 2-3 gallons left just as the last bar dissappears.

I traveled 721 miles and the pump clicked off at 8.479 gallons.
721 / 8.479 = 85.03 MPG.
The dash said 62.

85 Can't be right. It probably clicked off early.

After work I drove to a station to see how much could be added to the first click off. The distance between stations was 34.6 miles so I figured that used less than half gallon between the two.

It took .84 gallons to click off so I added .4 gallons and adjusted the formula to:
721 / 8.88 = 81.19MPG.

I wanted to see how much it took to completely fill - to top off so I'd click off and wait 10-15 seconds before clicking again, and after about 4 minutes of paused clicking it was full.

I had the nozzle barely past that trap door inside the filler tube and as I extracted it about 3/4 cup of gas drained out of the nozzle down the side of the car and across the ground, all out of a full nozzle. Guess I need more practice at that.

I pumped a total of 2.75 gallons into the tank at that 2nd station.

81.19 MPG? I guess. The dash said 62 and is usually off no more than +- 2MPG however once last winter it said 68 but calculated about 10 less for what ever reason.

Hmmm. Even though the numbers are there it doesn't seem possible. These are Insight figures.
I don't believe anyone "snuck" any extra fuel between fills. No one else drove the car and I've been monitoring my ODO.

Anyway, I'm going for that legendary +800 mile trip this time since my tank is jammed full.

Any ideas? I don't know what to think. I'm not celebrating yet. Guess I'll have to see what the next few tanks do.

In the mean time I've entered my 81.2 figure in the database.

Congratulations! I wish I could have such an odd tank. I hope it is not something that will ruin the next tank.

I had that 'have gas spill out of the tank' experience once also. What a miserable feeling. I don't try topping off the tank anymore ..

If the dash said 62 there is no way you got 85. Either someone snuck gas in or you will pay the price next tank. I usually fill up at about the 300 mile mark and just a couple tenths of a gallon swing my calculated tanks up to 10% but this always self corrects the next tank.

Yea, 81MPG is really odd.
It's not possible that anyone snuck extra gas in but as you mention the next tank(s) will tell if this is even remotely valid.
It will take a while to find out though with that much fuel packed in my car.
Not sure if that's good or bad

I don't think I could take a 20-30MPG "even it out" tank!

BTW the video portion of my project is finished and working on the audio part.
Hope to have it finished this month.

I started adding an audio commentary but it proved to be way too much work.
Instead I added notations (Titles) along the way.
Last night before retiring I was going to set the PC to render it all.

I haven't had all that much experience in video compression but had some luck with 15fps cbr 250kbps 320x240 mpg format.

I think I can render the 1hr video with under 100mb.

I'll see if I can find one of those free web site space websites to post it.

Anyone volunteer some space?

h.264 is a considerable advance over mp4.
I don't know if the windows OS has that codec built-in yet for compression use, but I am pretty sure that quicktime for windows has a decoder, as do linux and Mac already for viewing.

If you would like to compress in this format but are unable to locally, message me and we can arrange to send a disc to me for encoding
