I just returned from a trip to the Milwaukee Hybrid Group so took a few notes along the way to post for this thread. Boy what differences in price. I especially liked the 10-cent to 20-cent change inside of 15 miles around the North Chicago, IL area.

Min price was $2.09 near Gurnee, IL on the way out and I saw that same price near the Prime Outlet shops in Fremont, IN on the way back.

Max price was $2.36 in Oak Creek, WI (which beat out the $2.34 price on the Indiana Turnpike even!).

$2.18 @ I-79 near Pittsburgh, PA
$2.19 @ I-80/I-90 near Sheffield, OH
$2.18 @ I-80 near Toledo, OH
$2.24 @ I-80 at last Westbound service plaza in OH
$2.34 @ I-80 at first Westbound service plaza near Angola, IN
$2.15 @ I-80/I-90 near Portage, IN
$2.21 @ I-94 near Highland Park, IL
$2.29 @ I-94 near North Chicago, IL (~10 miles from Highland Park, IL)
$2.09 @ I-94 near Gurnee, IL (~5 miles from North Chicago, IL)
$2.36 @ I-94 near Oak Creek, WI
$2.25 @ I-94 near Delafield, WI
$2.12 @ I-80 near Fremont, IN
$2.16 @ Rt 20 near Angola, IN (~8 miles from Fremont, IN but off the turnpike)
$2.18 @ I-79 near Pittsburgh, PA

.

--> Averaged 685 miles/week and 49.0 mpg in first year (35.7k miles from Aug 7, 2006 to Aug 7, 2007)

Man, some of y'all need to move down south to the lands ruled by conservatives. DFW area north ... filled up today at $2.04, but that's up from my last tank at $1.97. Didn't think I would see a '1' in the first digit, perhaps ever again. Woo-hoo! It has been in the low 2s (teens or 2.0x) for quite some time now.

94 pence per litre over here in the UK (for diesel), which is about $6.80 per US gallon.

That's why so many of us use SVO (only 30p/litre, big savings)!

In the past, on trips to downstate/central Illinois, I routinely see a substantial price drop. The Chicago suburbs, especially the ones further north, tend to be more expensive. However, this week, making the same trip, I was shocked. Prices are more even around the state than I've ever seen them! The cheapest gas I've seen in the suburbs was $2.11 ($2.09 at a discount from Sam's Club for members only). I expected the southern, rural Illinois areas to be well below $2. To my surprise, gas down south was $2.12-2.18! -no different than the cheapest gas up here. Sure, there are a couple of places in the burbs where it hits as high as $2.29, but still, I've never seen the lowest prices in the south when they didn't beat the lowest prices up here before.

Thanks for confirming my findings from the weekend where it was $2.09 at Gurnee, IL but 10 miles down the road past North Chicago, IL it was $2.24. Insane. I also discovered that some Milwaukee residents drive down to Chicago and fill up with the "un-reformulated" gas which they say gets them about 7-8 mpg more from their Prius than the gas around Milwaukee. Maybe that is the big difference in prices - some have winter gas and some have summer gas and others have a mix somehow.

Oh yeah, definitely insane. My commute is about 20 miles north across suburban Chicagoland, and prices along the way vary so much! Sometimes it's as much as $.22, top to bottom price (other times the gap is as narrow as $.10 or $.12).
I have no idea whether each station has a different mix or if something else is causing it. I would have guessed that Cook County taxes are higher than the outer county taxes... but I don't know for sure. That's not reflected in the posted price anyway, I wouldn't think.
