Hybrids finally getting respect
Although it was a work colleague who first informed me about the Honda Insight (in Japan) about 6 years ago, during 3.5 as an owner, I’ve endured (and honestly enjoyed) wisecracks about gerbils and hamsters under the hood.
A few weeks ago in the workplace, while waiting outside of a meeting room for the previous occupants to vacate, I was overwhelmed with questions about my car, and later learned that I’d been the topic of the overtime discussion.
It seems that one of the participants had recently towed a classic Charger with a Hummer over a considerable distance, getting approximately 8 mpg in the process. Their fuel cost was over $ 250
As a result of recent publicity about the 2005 Tour de Sol competition, an unusual looking recumbent bicycle I use for commuting in good weather, and perhaps mostly the current high price of gasoline, it’s become known around the water cooler that my recently modified car “Sputnik” typically achieves over 90 mpg on the summer commute.
As the number of hybrid cars in the parking lot increases to a critical mass, and as many come to the realization that the generosity of the fossil fuel fairy is not infinite, a change to the value system seems inevitable.
‘Looking forward to sharing information, ideas, and data with the greater hybrid community.
