Default 9200 mile oil change analysis

I just got the analysis results back from the oil that came out of my escape hybrid after the first oil change at 9200 miles.

For those that want the simple terms, about 85% of the oil's useful life had been used up. There were no levels that indicated excessive wear or indication that extending the interval was harmful.

For the technical folks, here are the results in ppm

Wear metals

Copper-----actual 21ppm------safe limit 45ppm
Aluminum---actual 14ppm------safe limit 20ppm
Chromium---actual 2ppm-------safe limit 15ppm
Iron--------actual 43ppm------safe limit 125ppm
Lead-------actual 2ppm-------safe limit 50ppm
Nickel------actual 1ppm-------safe limit 15ppm
Tin---------actual 2ppm-------safe limit 20ppm

Contaminant Metals

Potassium----actual 11ppm------safe limit 50ppm
Silicon-------actual 37ppm------safe limit 40ppm

Additive Metals Actual Ideal Ranges

Antimoney---actual 0ppm-----ideal range n/a
Barium-------actual 1ppm-----ideal range n/a
Boron--------actual 242ppm---ideal range 0-1000
Calcium------actual 2131ppm--ideal range 0-4000
Magnesium---actual 0ppm-----ideal range 0-4000
Molybdenum--actual 44ppm---ideal range 0-300
Phosphorus---actual 634ppm--ideal range 700-1500
Sodium-------actual 21ppm---ideal range 100
Zinc----------actual 829ppm--ideal range 800-1600

Viscosity @100 C cst 7.84 (in grade)
TBN (d2896 method) 2.5 actual--minimum safe level--2

Viscosity @ 100c was in the 20wt range.

Hope this info is of interest to those wondering if it is safe to use the recommended 10k oil change interval.
This was the initial oil change of the factory fill ford oil, a semisynthetic blend.

I used the Ford fully synthetic oil at this change (from the bottle, not bulk). I will be testing this oil at the same interval of change (when we reach 18-20k on the truck.

The ideal ranges listed for the additive metals are according to the oil analysis lab's recommendations.

Cool Sean. I've always wanted to do that, but have never got
"a-round-tuit".

I use Mobil 1 Full Syn and go 15,000 miles between changes... which for me, is usually 7-8 months. I also put in a run-time clock... so I can make sure I do not go over 200 engine hours per OCI.

Most people will get 200 hours a lot faster than 15,000 miles. For me, it's about a tie.

400 key-on hours = 354 Engine hours for me this past year. That's another reason I go more than 10K, some miles are engine off miles. The rest are 90% highway for me... gentle loads, and not many cold starts.

I do not think people who do lots of stop&go should go 15k.
But:
A) Cars are better these days
B) Oils are better these days
C) Hybrids are more gentle on oil, since there is less idle time and the electric does most of the heavy lifting ( work )

Thanks for posting.

Bill,

I assume this is the link: http://www.bgfindashop.com/bgservice...cationfuel.htm

for where you got your oil analyzed. These mini-articles on this site is something Mark Smith needs to review. I know he has an interest in trying to produce some on-line learning experiences and these articles may help him start the process.

Just to clarify however,

No BG products were used, or have ever been used in my 08FEH. I simply used this company's oil analysis lab to report the findings of the sample I sent in.

This company was chosen only because I have a friend that works for them in outside sales.

The link you have appears to be for finding a shop that sells their products. The link to the company itself is http://www.bgprod.com/home.html

Hope this info helps.

I have more frequent starts, and shorter trips, and even though I'm now using Mobil 5W20 full synthetic, I don't plan to exceed 7Kmiles. I would extend this with fewer cold starts and longer driving intervals like John (GPSMAN1), but since I don't, the oil and filter must be changed more frequently to suit me.

Thanks for the analysis detail. I have never done this either, so in the interest of keeping an open mind, I'll conside doing it to determine the 'real need'.

I'll be the 1st to admit that coming from the old school, I tend to change oil more frequently than necessary. But at least ALL my oil gets recycled, so don't shoot me in the heart
