Re: Ford Recalls 900K Escapes / Mariner 2008-2011
My mechanic went to the trouble of getting the 8th version of the steering column for my FEH. I don't know if that number of revisions implies some thrashing around to get it right, but it doesn't sound great to me.

At least they are trying.

And I suppose different version numbers could mean different suppliers, inconsequential changes, etc. rather than evidence that the previous versions weren't good enough or didn't resolve the problem.

Might be a different supplier but if the number is the same, it should have the same specs.

I contacted my local Ford dealership to inquire on the recall situation.I was then forwarded to the warranty handler to recite my VIN to make sure I was part of the recall.2010 Merc Hybrid,Yes. So,no parts are availible at this time, sorry.I said I guess I'll check back in July? She said "No problem",I replied "Not for YOU !!"

It's a bit of a problem. Ford probably can't stock up on parts until they determine how many vehicles need which fix. And they can't determine that without diagnosing the vehicles. So I'm willing to bet that people will be asked to bring in their Escapes, and many will be sent away to be contacted later when the parts are available.
On one hand this is bad because people will be driving potentially dangerous vehicles, but on the other hand at least they know what might happen. It does seem it usually happens at lower speeds, and steering is often reported to be restored by touching the brakes, or, at worst, turning the ignition off and on again. Frequency of repetitions are very low.

Have you received a letter about the recall yet? I haven't heard of anyone being notified yet. If I were you, I'd phone them and ask exactly what they plan to do and are prepared to do. I say this because I called them, they scheduled an appointment, I kept the appointment, only to be turned away because they had no data on how to diagnose or repair the problem. The staff at West Coast Ford in Burnaby BC didn't even apologize for wasting my time. They said to check in now and then to see if they were prepared to actually do something.
edit: corrected the dealership name from a similarly-named dealership in the area.
