Default Mirror replacement.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had to replace either the driver's side or passenger side view mirrors?

If so, does anyone know how the black cover is attached to the door? I've found a pdf for installation of a signal mirror that claims that you need to remove the door panel, but when I talked to the dealer, they've said that the black plastic piece covering the inside just needs to be 'popped' off and you don't need to remove the door panel. I know on my civic it was fairly easy to pop off when we had to replace the mirror, but I can't see how this is connected to the door to remove it.

I've already cut costs of replacement by finding a mirror from a wrecked '05 escape, and I really don't want to pay the dealer to install, when I know they're easy to install once getting access to the door where the mirror is connected.

What type of places would carry service/repair manuals, what would they cost, and would they cover such things?

Thanks,
jeff.

The "sail" is pretty easy to pop off. I did it when installing speakers in them.

However, I did have the door panel removed and I can't remember if it would be possible to remove the sail without removing the door panel first. No big deal though, the door panel is really simple to remove.

Here are some instructions...

Thanks, shortly after posting I went back out and figured I'd just take the door panel off and see what was underneath.

Turns out that you really only need to remove the one screw from the door panel, the one directly under the 'sail' as that's as far as I had gotten before being able to pull it out far enough to see how it was fastened underneath.

After seeing this, it was easy to determine that I just had to pull, and it would pop off, but I didn't want to break anything. Anyway, it's apart now, and I just need to find my sockets to actually remove the mirror... might have to wait until the morning when I get to work.

It'll be nice to have a mirror again... and I'm glad I didn't have to pay the outrageous price the dealer was asking for the part.

My wife executed a de-mirroring to my HCH 04. The sail just popped off and three bolts later and snap-off/on to the electrical, I had a new mirror. Cost about $139.00. I did not remove the door panel.

Charlie,

I'd done the job on a civic a couple years ago, and knew that it would be fairly easy, just didn't want to break the sail when trying to remove it, as then I'd have to replace that as well. And on the escape, one of the door panel screws actually looks to pass through a hole in the bottom of the sail, so it at least requires removing that screw.

So unfortunately, after pulling the mirror off, I noticed that the connector for the mirror is routed through a hole in the door and into the inside under the door panel.

So it turns out that to actually fully remove the mirror and install the new one, you need to remove the door panel (even though the dealer claims you don't need to).

Default Right front side view mirror glass replacement

I drove a Ford Explorer, manual transmission, 4x4 SUV
for a number of years starting in December 1990 until
I purchased the Mariner Hybrid.

One thing that became clear to me when we test drove
the misses car, as our original intent was that her Satellite
Silver MMH was to be mine, was that the rear head rests
up or down restricts the central and the right rear vision
that I had no problems with while having the Explorer.
Aside from having less frontal vision restriction that I
had on the Explorer, or at least it seems that way to me
with the Mariner, I found that there is a major blind
spot for the driver in the right rear portion of the car.
Instead of taking the head rests off both Mariners, as I
had a stern caution to "draw back nubs" if I did from the
misses if I tried it on her car, was that with this blind spot
I have to use the right side view mirror much more than I
have ever had to before. The problem that I have that I
also had with the Explorer is the mirror with its "Objects
are closer than they appear" drives me bonkers when I am
forced to rely on that mirror when driving while changing
lanes.

Does or can Ford offer a replacement glass that is the
same type glass as the left front side view glass mirror
that can be fitted for the right side glass mirror or do I
have to have the glass change custom done? I asked this
same question many years ago and am hoping there has
been an upgrade since (actually a reversion back in time
when both side view mirrors had the same type glass).
Unlike the misses car, I do not have the heated mirrors
but if I can have just the glass replaced we would do it
for her car also but at this time I am not sure if our doing
that will affect or restrict the heating ability of the glass
if we go ahead and do it.

What do you' think about changing just the glass for the
right side mirror?

Jim
