Default NY State Inspection

She's a year old, and due for inspection. I took her in, not really knowing what to expect. I stood close by ready to tell the guy that if he needed to keep it idling, shift into N, and other such helpful hybrid hints.

But it was over before I knew it, because there was no emissions portion required. What normally costs $37 for most vehicles, was only $10!

Plus, the place I took it is next door to a hand car wash and they give you a free wash with each service. Sweeeeet!

...and another thing, I was worried that the emissions testing was going to destroy my average MPG for this tank with all that sitting still and idling, but it wasn't even necessary.

Cars under two years old are exempt from emissions inspections.

Which vehicle makes and models are subject to the OBD test?
Most 1996 and newer gasoline-powered cars and light-duty trucks equipped with OBD are subject to the OBD test. New vehicles are exempt from the emissions test for their first two years on the road with the same owner, but are subject to annual safety inspections, and are required to undergo both OBD emissions testing and safety inspections if they are sold.

Here is the link for the state web site FAQ for inspections.

Here is the link for the enhanced emissions program:

OBD-II cars don't have to have the treadmill/tailpipe test. They hook their computer up to yours and if there are no error codes, you pass. They also look for a check engine light.

Hope this helps.

Ray
