Not sure how common the steering issue is. I have seen it posted as a problem here by a couple of people. Always remember though..... thousands of people with no problem would never bother to post. Only the ones that have a problem will so it always looks "common" on the internet when it probably isn't.
That being said, having your steering go out at 900miles sucks. Hopefully you'll have no more problems with it. Mines at 5100 and no problems yet (cross your fingers).
Mines a 4WD and I get 30-31. As you learn to drive a bit differently and the car breaks in it will get better. My first tank or two got me about 26. The common point for the 2WD seems to be around 30-34 from that chart that pops up on the "home" page. However if you want to be a "nut"

like gpsman1 you can do alot better than that (requires a different driving style, and higher pressure in the tires, etc... read his posts, and others to learn how to do that...
If you are listening 'gpsman1'.... just teasing. I'm not willing to put as much effort into it as you are... but I've picked up a couple of your tricks that I use.
