Not really on purpose; I was on a deserted stretch of highway trying to get to a gas station with quality fuel, instead of one of those watered-down places.

I can point out that I have learned that the '08 FEH will go about 15 miles at highway speeds after it displays "0 Miles to Empty". After the gas is out, the "stop safely now" message will be displayed, and the electric motor will kick in and take you about 2 miles at exactly 30mph. It will then drop down to exactly 20mph for another mile, and then exactly 10mph for maybe half a mile. It will then crawl about 100 more feet at a speed that is too slow to register. Neat stuff!

How many gallons did it take when you filled it? I usually go about 20-40 miles past 0 MTE and have never been able to stuff more than about 14.4 gallons in.

Best trip: 48.9 mpg over 17.9 miles (scangauge)

My experience (and that of Gary G.) is that 1.3 gal remain when the dash indcator says 0 MTE. The 2008 could be different however.

Sounds like the 2008 is a little different, and a little better in this regard.

In the 2005, and I assume 2006 & 07's as well, once you run out of gas, you can travel EXACTLY at 22 MPH max, for as long at the battery will hold out. Usually, about 2 miles. Then the car slows down like a wind-up toy running down... 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 mph, ......0.

In the 2005-2007's, there is a NOMINAL 15 gallon gas tank.
In fact, it holds 18 gallons, but there is 3 gallons of "air space" above the gas.

The air space is by design, but if you roll the car on 2 wheels, on a slope, at high tide, you can shove 18 gallons in there.

15 is the "norm" and the 0 MTE warning comes on at about 13.7gal used.
I usually can go 25 to 45 miles past zero.

Even that is more than I thought. I had assumed that without any gas, the entire system would shut down due to the fact that it can't keep the catalytic converter toasty warm.

I agree that technically, that is true. But the way Ford implemented the EPA emissions requirements, I thought the cat always needed to be kept toasty warm, even if in EV mode.

But if your tank is dry, keeping the cat warm becomes secondary to getting more gas. That way you can get to a gas station to put more gas in it so you can keep the cat warm.
