Default rear bumper dirt accumulation

This may sound a little strange but the top of the rear bumper seems to get more dirt on it faster than rest of the car. the car can look fairly clean but the rear tailgate and the top of the bumper get very dirty. It detracts from the rest of the vehicle plus can get on your clothes when emptying the rear trunk area of groceries. Any ideas why this is occurring and what can be done to correct it. Is this due to no mud flaps on the rear wheels? Is there something with the aerodynamics? Thanks.

Its all Aerodynamics, the air flows under the car then Eddys back around the back of the car and up. Did you ever notice in the winter your rear window is always covered with crap?. Most suv's and mini vans have this happen. If avail for your car, get a rear window deflector. It mounts above the rear door and forces wind down across the window when your driving. Aslo mud flaps will help but not solve your problem. good luck.

Clubford00-thank you very much for the advice. This is the first van/SUV type that we have owned. I will be looking into a rear deflector as soon as I post this reply.

Hi,

This problem is not limited to vans and trucks. My VW Golf has this problem big time. It gets so bad that the road salt and dirt gets into the hatch lock keyhole (which has a dust cover) and seized the lock once after only 2-3 years!

Cheers,

Roch Comeau

As I found out yesterday, it is also a great place for snow and ice to accumulate - to the point where I couldn't open the liftgate. At least the window opens independently.

Easy for you to say from Central Florida.

11° F here this morning. If I grab the garden hose it will snap because it is frozen solid. Not to mention the skating rink it would cause on the driveway.....

I would use the advice CLubford00 gave you. I had one of those rear air deflectors installed on my last SUV (a '99 Durango) I worked great at helping keep the rear window somewhat clear (also blew dust off the rear wiper.) However, I just recently saw the rear air deflector Ford offers for the FEH and I didn't care for it. Looks like I'll be putting up with the dust on the bumper.
