Default What tire pressure are you hypermilers using?

I'm running 44 - 45 psi. Anyone getting any benefit from running more?

How much more might this tire - wheel combo tolerate?

Anyone done coasting tests at higher psi?

MM

I ran a test on my HCH were I used +5psi over recommended and the other test I used MAX (tire) psi. My FE did not improve going to MAX. What did improve though was handling and braking. At the expense of feeling more bumps.

Personally, I usually go with 44, and I check the first of every month. As a reminder, recommended is 35.

I'm Insulted!

The Ford Escape Hybrid was the worlds first Hybrid SUV, and America's first Hybrid.
It came out in the Fall of 2004.
It comes in 2WD and 4WD.

BTW, I run 49psi in all tires, and get great coasting results, and would have to expect better results all around.

With 49 psi, and even a 1% slope, the FEH will roll a long, long ways.

Anyone using something other than Continental tires? And do they make a difference?

HI,

Maybe this is a silly question but... Aren't you supposed to use the recommended tire pressure because that's what pressure the tires are designed to be at? Will the higher pressure lead to different (degraded) grip and handling and uneven tire wear (wear faster in the middle)? Will it present a higher failure rate?

Just my thoughts. I am all for improving milleage but I see a lot of talk in these forums about high tire pressure, coasting with the engine off etc. with little discussion on potential safety (IMHO).

Cheers,

Roch

There could be any number of reasons a manufacturer recomends a tire presure. Remember the Firestone suv tires that were "bad" turns out ford recomended a preasure too low for that tire on that car. At least thats what I hear. They could recomend it based on load, noise, comfort, or any number of things.
