2014 Accord vs. 2003 Civic, impressions
I'm new to this forum but not to driving a hybrid. Here's my impression of the 2014 Accord.
I love my new accord, has about 3k miles so far, 90% highway at 69-71 mph with the occasional burst when I get frustrated.
I had my '03 civic hybrid for 11 years. As far as cars go, the Accord blows the old civic away in any category you might imagine, from ride to handling to safety to quiet. I feel the trunk is smaller but that's not a problem for me.
As for mileage though, I knew I would take a hit. I think the '03 was a bit special, got a bit better mileage than the later civic hybrids. Regardless, I could occasionally get 50-51 on a trip, which I felt was batter than any Prius could do. (My avg was 44-50 per trip)
The best the accord will do is 40-42. So far (same trip). Lifetime avg on the civic was 46.1 (82k miles). So far the Accord is showing 43.0. The civic's mileage improved after 15k miles, I wonder if that was me or the car.
Still, I'm happy at 43. If I did more local driving, I think I could bump it up a bit, but these cars lose their efficiency as the speed increases. On my 6 mile round trip to town on a level road at 30 mph, I get 55mpg and am often running in ev mode. Very pleasant.
Nice job Honda.

Thanks for sharing your experience with you new hybrid. I've had mine for six months now. I drive 50/50 highway and urban and average 50mpg almost all the time. The last three tanks of gas are all 50mpg average. I'm not doing anything special to achieve this, just driving normally and usually go no higher than 70mph on the interstate. I do keep the "eco mode" engaged all the time; because that gives me the best results without really noticing any difference in performance. To think that I am getting basically the same mileage out of a tank of gas as a Prius is phenomonal! One has to remember a Prius is 700#s lighter and smaller than the Accord hybrid also.
We also have a 2006 Civic EX, with 100K on it. Pre-ethanol days gave us 42mpg with that on a trip; now we max out at 36-38mpg with it. It has served us well though. You can count us very satisfied with the new Accord Hybrid! Love it!
