This is UNBELIEVABLE! I almost changed my mind after reading this post on hybridcars.com:

I certainly hope this is a joke because if it's not this guy is an IDIOT! Here's the text from the post:

We just bought a Prius. It had no sunroof wich bothered me very much so I hired a man who said he knew how to install them that I met at Starbucks. When I went to pick up our new #8 Prius I discovered that Jeb, the installer, had used a saw-zaw/ hack saw to cut an irregularly sqare hole in the roof and used some type of epoxy or silicone to install a flexible piece of plexiglass on the roof which will not open.

I just about lost my lunch when I saw this.

Now after driving our new Prius for a couple of months, scratches have built up and the sun has caused it ot turn somewhat yellow now as well as it tends to sag in the middle. In the summer I have a stick braced on the floor to the sunroof to hold the sagging plexiglass up. (My wife hates this part but I don't care.)

My wife is angry over what I did to the car and especially the fact that the shape of the sunroof hole is somewhat of a jagged trapazoid shape.

My Question to Toyota... On such a popular car, why would you not ad something that most sun loving people like... a SUNROOF?!?!

I spoke with an authorized Inalfa sunroof installer today. According to the company representative, most sunroofs are installed AFTER the car is manufactured. According to him no manufacturer that he is aware of stamps or forms their autombile roofs with a sunroof die. Instead each car is made without a standard roof. If a sunroof is to be added it's sent to another location or area within the manufacturing plant where that is done. Can anyone verify that this is true.

By the way, the sunroof that the manufacturer recommends for the 2005 HAH is Inalfa Model 840. You can find the specs here: http://www.inalfasunroofs.com/

One benefit of an aftermarket sunroof is the electronics that go along with it. For instance, with the Inalfa you can press different buttons to automatically set the sunroof in various positions. Plus, the Inalfa will automatically close when the key is removed from the ignition. Some manufacturers also have rain sensors as well.

The cost I was quoted to install one of these was $1,181.25. The installer needs approximately 3-days. I hope this helps anyone considering an aftermarket sunroof. I may actually do this.

UPDATE

I just got off the phone with Inalfa, who said the dealer I spoke with was incorrect. The fact is manufacturers use a special pre-stamped roof for cars with sunroofs. In fact, the way that you can tell if an aftermarket sunroof has been installed is the trim ring on the roof of the vehicle. Factory installed sunroofs don't have this.
