I bought my HAH with 166 miles on it and have just been driving it around town since. This weekend with approx. 2,200 miles on it now, I took my first road trip. I got 31.5 mpg on the first half of my trip and 29 mpg on the trip home. It got a little over 400 miles to my tank. The temp outside was between 24 and 34 degrees.

I got 31.5 mpg and I had the ECO light on over 90% of the time. I was cruising between 60 and 75 miles per hour and babying the gas pedal. Does this sound like the correct mpg that I should be getting? I kinda hot roded on the trip home and got 29 mpg.

I noticed the the ECO light wont come on over 82 miles per hour. anyone else notice this?

I love the way the car drives, the power and style is great also but will i get better mpg in the future. does it need to be broken in more? was the temps outside too cold?

with the cold temperatures and the fact you were driving 82 miles per hour you are going to suffer. The car will do much better in warm weather, and if you can control your urge to use all the power.

At 2,200 miles, your engine is just barely broken in. I saw gains in FE at about 1,700 miles and larger gains around 3,000 miles. The 75 miles per hour rate was killing your FE. The sweet spot is from 55 to 65 miles per hour. Above about 65 miles per hour even with ECO on, FE starts to drop.

Just did my first road trip this weekend also. I drove from Jacksonville to Lakeland and back. Before that, 95% of my driving consisted of 20 minute trips to and from work with average FE of 28 - 29 mpg.


On the trip down, I drove at 70 miles per hour and got 37.1 mpg. On the trip back, my wife drove at 75 miles per hour and got 35 mpg.

One thing I noticed is that in the city, both the dash and computer mpg readout are about 1 - 1.5 mpg higher than actual (calculated by trip & gas pump volume). On the highway trip, the dash and computer were closer to each other, but were about 1.5 mpg lower than the manual calculation.

I was also surprised how much 4 -5 miles per hour difference in speed (at 70 miles per hour) resulted in 2 - 3 mpg difference in FE.

Concur:
- 55-65 is best. I consistently get >40mpg at 60mph above 40deg, day in and day out. Over 70mph or below 40deg drops me like a rock.
- "eco" just means you are getting better than 30mpg at that instant in time...most often by being on 3 cylinders. So even if its lit up 100% of the time you can still be getting only 30mpg, as you have seen.

The engine cannot supply the necessary power with 3 cylinders above 82mph- what you saw was completely normal.

FWIW, the HAH still rides very nicely with 38psi in the tires- try that and see if it bumps mpg up. I run at 40-42, but it starts to feel a little sporty then.

i just checked my tire pressure and the front drivers side had 50psi the passenger front side had 45psi and the both of the rear tires had 28 psi.


i put them all to 45 psi. the max on the tire says 44psi. i hope this will make an improvement on the mpg

Oh yeah it will. Just going from mid-30s to 42 bumps me up 1mpg, even in cold. You notice the biggest difference while coasting- the car will roll much more easily down slighter hills with them pumped up. Ride is a little rougher, but I sort of like the sportier feel- we DO have a sporty car in disguise after all.

I also notice my car seems to track straighter with them pumped up, but that's probably my head playing tricks.

ok so I did my first "Road Trip" in the 05 HAH over the weekend - 180 miles on Christmas eve, which got me up over the magical 1000 mile mark to get the car more "broken in." 80% highway/20% overland. Just driving it like a "normal" car - pretty much always on cruise control on the highway parts.


38.4 mpg

VERY nice! did the whole trip on a quarter tank of gas.

Of course, you have the advantage of having been trained on the HCH... its great to hear someone coming from the "upper tier" mpg cars who is also happy with the HAH mileage!
