The problem you have is that without an electric motor, your acceleration would suffer while switching from 3 cylinder mode to 6 cylinder mode.
It is better on a hybrid, because the electric motor can kick in with extra power while the cylinders are coming back online.
Electric power is instantaneous.
But, I know that other companies have tried VCMs in the past without much success.
