Default Dynamic Mileage Forum Signatures

This is something I've been meaning to do for quite some time, and finally I did it.

This is my personal, dynamic mileage forum signature. When I add a new tank to the database, my signature updates automatically. And, now, you can use it, too!

The server reads the URL for your unique signature, extracts your car ID number, and prints out the current fuel economy rating. To create yours, follow these simple steps:

  1. If permitted, copy this HTML code as your signature.
    Quote:
    <a href="http://greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/car/#.html" style="border:0" title="Hybrid Cars Mileage"><img src="http://greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/car/#/signature.png" border=0 alt="Hybrid Cars Mileage"></a>
If HTML is not allowed, use this URL for your image:
    Quote:
    http://greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/car/#/signature.png
and this URL for your link:
    Quote:
    http://greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/car/#.html
    <<
  2. Paste the HTML code as your signature or, if not permitted, create your signature using the provided URLs.<
  3. Finally, replace the character "#" with your database car ID number in both instances.
This number can be found in the address of your car's page in the mileage database immediately after "car/". For instance, my address is "greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/car/5-midori.html" and my ID # is 5.
That's it! If you have any quesiton, please let me know. I'll see about creating an automatic code generator to make things a bit easier. Enjoy!

I noticed it earlier and was wondering how you did it. I didn't think you made it universal so everyone could do it. I love it!

For those who have already implemented the code, I just made some minor changes to the HTML version. Your old ones will still work.

As a suggestion, you should probably use the HTML version on GreenHybrid. There is an automatic green underline for all links on this site, but the HTML version automatically removes that.

I like it already. I have always liked dynamic graphics. It reminds me of when I put up a few web pages in college and used wunderground.com's weather sticker.

Jerome, you didn't create it correctly, haha. The link should be around the graphic, not separate Unless that's how you intended it...

Jason,

I think the MPG sig is wonderful. My only mini-gripe is it's size. GreenHybrid gets quite a bit of publicity on the site; perhaps you would consider removing it from the sig, in order to cut the vertical space required in half ? I would enjoy seeing my car's nick, it's type, and the dynamic MPG.

Cheers -- Eric

Eric,
I have plans to add additional information to the signatures, or even offer more than one style based on the member's desires. However, the logo has got to stay. Members will use this signature on other websites, as well; it's got to point back to GreenHybrid. Not to mention, it eats our bandwidth like there's no tomorrow.

If you'd like a smaller one, not to worry. I'll try and make a smaller one soon. The advantage of having the dynamic image, too, is I can simply edit the files and everyone's signatures are updated automatically.

You're right. It is messed up. Can we use the html link? I thought that html was not allowed. Or that is what I thought when it says HTML off at the bottom of a forum or posting page. See, I didn't write many web pages when I was in college.

Well, I'll experiment and see what happens and go from there. If my sig actually looks correct at some point, than my experiment worked.
