I think we really need to disable the use of changing colors, font sizes and font faces, and so on. Bold and italics are fine, but when I see a thread that has every color of the rainbow, underlined text, giant letters, tiny letters, and more rainbow colors, it just gets distracting.

When I see 24 pt blue text, I always wonder if it was done on purpose.
I'd leave the rich text -- I have also seen it used very well. Martin from GM comes to mind.

I'll consider turning the "annoying" ones off.

  • Hopefully, the few that do it will just exercise restraint.
  • Technical question: Do limiting the fonts and colors save bandwidth?
  • Another comment: At a few forums, a few type like they are on a cell phone. Part of this might be a generation gap, but I find it rude to do on a message board since it's easy to spell things out with adequate grammar. It's also considerate for members who know English as a second language. My experience is has been members that type like they are on a cell phone are more likely to be rude/trollish. It's a corllary of the nice clothes tend to make people nicer theory....

Chuck,

In response to your question, it really depends. There are a variety of techniques used while coding to limit the bandwidth draw by using colors, fonts, etc. This site is relatively efficient in its use. While technically, yes, colors and fonts increase bandwidth usage, their use in posts would be extremely insignificant to the point of being a nonissue. On a larger scale, had I not optimized site-wide code, there would be significantly greater bandwidth requirements.

I think personally the few people that are so annoyed by font size and colors should have taken in consideration that just possibly the person or persons using them only did so to add a little flare to their post (Not) to confuse, make post hard to read or certainly not any form or matter "Upset" other people reading or posting on same thread.

I'm a big boy myself and I think since it appears to upset a few people it's just as easy for me to type in black.

So for those few that have been upset over colors and type sizes/fonts etc. I personally want to be a gentleman and team player and say to one and all "I'm-Sorry" for the annoyance folks.

I would like to share this with everyone and I hope (Jason S.) reads this post I think he will find it interesting as I did when it took place over at "InsightCentral". I did a post at InsightCentral to let the folks there know that I had made a decision to order a 06 HCH instead of the (INSIGHT) and because of that decision I would not more than likely be posting with them as I used to and if they wanted to stay in touch or say Hi every once in awhile that I would be over at WWW.GREENHYBRID.COM on the Honda Civic Hybrid Forum so come see me and best wishes.

I get a PM from one of the moderators shortly thereafter and was informed that because of there being (shall-we-say) bad feelings between the two forums that my thread had been (Edited-Somewhat) but just slightly to remove the WWW.GREENHYBRID.COM site from my post as mentioned. I thought at the time how strange that one forum would care if people read or posted on another forum when I thought they were all set up for the use of members and members different styles of expression as long as that was not used in a Malicious, Degrading manner to another member and I think the reason I'm posting this is because these comments in this thread kinda remind me of that comment from InsightCentral. All of us are different and express ourselves in different ways and I personally don't necessarily think that it is done to annoy other members.

I guess I have said my thoughts on this.

Have-A-Nice-Day

Terry

BTW; This thread saddens me Ohwell

While I agree that your posts were harsh on the eyes with the large green font; I do think maybe the person starting this thread should have possibly told you it bothered them rather than asking a ban on all colors.

Tom, the more I think about the comments on this the more silly/childish/ridiculous this whole matter is, as far as I am concerned. I just was thinking to myself when your posting came through, how many of the members that are making these comments have been in the service of their country in a war. Like Vietnam/Gulf etc.; and the reason I was wondering that is because I wonder if these members really realize that in other countries you do-not have the right to decide what color, font, size or anything else to use and in those countries they simply shoot you and your family if you disagree with how things are done. I will say that the statement above is extreme but simply to point out that isn't it nice for a few to dictate to others that happen to do things different that they are right and the other member or members are wrong.

In my gut I think if I see a thread or posting that bothers me I just move on and read another and think to myself I would not say or do that myself but I think that must be their opinion so live and let live. I have a sales background and therefore I use alot of fluff if you will in my topics simply to get attention and I thought to make them more (Interesting-And-Fun) to everyone and get members excited over a newly released product as myself giving a presentation to my sales staff. Let's get excited and get out there and make this happen, this 2006 Honda Hybrid is hot go get them gang.

Exam: "Let's Get-EXCITED-AND-Get-Out-There"

Which statement gets your attention and gets you excited about what is being said by the poster and you want to read the rest because the poster is so excited themselves. It's just a different way to say the same thing and some people are excited about the posting and obviously others as posted are (put-off) by the style but I think each member is neither right or wrong just a matter of personal preference and nothing more should be read into it.

Terry

I agree.

All I was saying was that while I had no problem with you posting in those colors, reading the posts kind of hurt my eyes. To me it was like someone shining a bright light in your eyes.

My real point was that while it was anoying to read the posts I didn't feel it was that big of a deal and that the person that said the site should ban colors and fonts should have just posted to you or who ever and mentioned their problem with it.
