Default Shifting to Park, is this normal?

I'm only a few hundred miles into ownership but I have a question about the smoothness of the tranny. When shifting into park from drive there is often an 'adjustment' thunk sound and some movement from the shifter.

Is this normal?

I've tried all manner of shifting into park using the p-brake to avoid this but alas, nothing seems to help ie: from drive with foot on brake, apply p-brake and go to park...clunk. Go to neutral, apply p-brake, turn off the truck, shift to Park remove key (best solution so far but doesn't always work).

Suggestions?

Thanks...

I have an 06 HiHy and don't experience what you hear and feel. Shifting into or out of any gear is smooth and quiet. I also do not remember any noise or shift movement on the demos that I drove.

My experience is the same as jajohnson. I have not noticed any "thunks", but I will pay more attention. I have noticed that after placing the shifter in P the vehicle rolls significantly more than any previous vehicle I have owned.

BTW, any chance you are parking on a slope? I'm wondering if an incline or decline could cause the tranny to "thunk" a bit.

I notice a slight roll when I place it in park. No thunk or noise.

Do any of you use the parking brake?

I was at the dealer picking up a key and I showed him. It only lightly 'clicked' when he was in it but he said that was normal.

hmmm...maybe I have to wait till something breaks? Or perhaps i'm too sensitive.

thanks for your feedback.

gang
I have not noticed anything at all. But i will listen more carefully. Perhaps some models do and other highlanders dont by luck of the draw. It doesnt sound like its something to really worry about as much as it might be annoying.

I use the parking brake about 70% of the time. I do not usually park on a slope.

I use the parking brake all the time, sometimes engaged before shifting into Park, sometimes after. I have never noticed a "thunk" and I have been listening for it the past couple of days.

Yeah, I'm probably just hyper sensitive. Thanks everyone for the feedback. My 2000 Tacoma brand new would pull to a stop light and make a clunk sound. It's widely known amongst Tacoma owners and Toyota said it was normal.

I'll just have to see if it becomes a regular sound or something happens.
