Cerberus's Sharp-Toothed Ways
Firm Has History Of Turnarounds Fueled by Cuts
By Frank Ahrens
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 15, 2007; Page D01
In more than a decade of buying into down-and-out companies across three continents, Cerberus Capital Management has applied a similar strategy to most of its targets: cut, cut and cut some more.
Now Chrysler is set to join a list of acquisitions that includes long-haul trucker Fruehauf, Air Canada and lingerie maker Frederick's of Hollywood. Many of those companies have experienced turnarounds under Cerberus's slashing ways, but not without pain. . . .
|
Let's see: - Hybrids on the lot, profitable company - Toyota
- Fewer hybrids on the lot, profitable company
- One model hybrid on the lot, surviving company
- One model, light-weight hybrid on lot, surviving company
- No hybrids on the lot -- Chrysler
As for hydrogen fuel celled vehicles, MIA. Not one hydrogen fuel celled vehicle can be bought from the show room floor, anywhere.

Re: Chrysler
Some think Cerberus is just going to milk whatever value Chrysler has left, then throw it away.

" And Chrysler officials insisted Monday there would be no more layoffs."
While that was true on Monday, what about on next Tueday?

Re: Chrysler
"... Gettelfinger holds a big trump card with the $18 billion in health and pension costs Cerberus agreed to take off Daimler’s hands. "
"Then it will likely put a smaller, more profitable player back in the public domain through an initial public offering of stock. “
Let's see, they will IPO Jeep as a separate spin-off. Possibly, Dodge too. Neither leaving with any of the heavy load of that $18 billion. That would leave what remains of Chrysler with all of the liability. Then, suddenly, Chrysler will close it doors, and all of that $18 billion will just vanish.

A Jeep Patriot Hybrid would already be in my garage if they built one.

For me, it would have been a Jeep Liberty Hybrid (w/Selectrac, UpCountry, etc).

Re: Chrysler
All Chrysler commercials on TV are aimed squarely at second-graders.
How about aiming just a bit higher? And while they are at it, they can fire their board of directors and get some people in there who have a clue.
