That's kind of an odd assertion, that you feel you'd be getting the same gas mileage in a non-hybrid civic. Upon what could you possibly be basing that statement?

Back to the thread topic: Thanks for the update on leanest and greenest and meanest, Spinner; that makes me feel better about my parents' recent purchase of a non-hybrid Toyota Corolla. Still in the greenest list, at least, even if it isn't a hybrid.

You are making it sound as if alternative fuel systems are a no-cost option. Diesel engines come with a premium. Have you ever been given a quote on what it would cost to convert to natural gas?

Just a suggestion but you might raise this question over in the HCH group. I drive something else and know each hybrid has unique characteristics that can be exploited for maximum mileage. The HCH experts in those forums probably have some helpful hints. But by all means, record your mileage so you can measure the effect of different changes.
