The buzz around this years LA Auto Show has been impressive. The downtown convention center was swamped with a large number of international and North American debuts of concepts and production cars. The event continues with the announcement of this years Design Challenge competition, hosted at the auto show. This years theme is environmental sustainability, with teams designing a vehicle for the year 2015 that has a net environmental gain, a life expectancy of 60 months and is 100-percent recyclable. The winner was the Hummer O2, designed by GMs West Coast Advanced Design Studio.

But it fits with CNW Marketing and the anti-hybrid crowd's fantasies.

VERY clever! I like the idea of trucks that use part of their exposed surface area for oxygen production. I wonder, too, if the fuel cell Hummer is also a hybrid.

it's too bad that fuel cells are so bloody expensive. Owning a great big truck wouldn't be bad if the pollution and fuel factors were negated.

Hope is like a candle held against the night.

It looks like it would be a great golf cart. Or moon rover. So were there any requirements to build a car anyone would or could own?

  Off Topic:
The internet is such a small place. This article has a byline by Justin Couture, who appears to be the same guy I know by that name as a frequent poster to BPR, a site about a TV show we both like. Yet there he is, writing Hummer propaganda, and here I am, writing about hybrids. It may be a different guy with the same name, though.

There is simply no way that the vehicle that won that Design Challenge was, in any sense at all, a Hummer. Saying that a Hummer won it and therefore implying that Hummers are environmentally friendly is like saying that we should put lung cancer and anti-smoking warning labels on Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. Same parent company as Phillip Morris cigarettes, but a completely different product. In this case, different worlds- at least as far as I can tell.

I mean, a car with algae in the door panels so it can photosynthesize?- very cool! Calling it a Hummer... takes some of the fun out of it.
