Toyota has said that it plans to halve the price difference between hybrid electric vehicles and gasoline models by around 2010, according to The Associated Press.
The UK's Financial Times adds that Toyota is aiming to reduce the hybrid cost premium to about US$1,900. Toyota's most recent current hybrids are priced about US$5,000 more than their gasoline counterparts.

Curious, I didn't realize it was a "$5,000" premium . . .

It's like PCs - it first cost me $2000 to get my 1st one in 1994. At one time there was talk of a $500 "network PC" that was essentially a smart terminal that logged in to an account with all your apps, etc. These days, you can get a decent desktop for $500-750.
