Re: They're at it again: 9 reasons not to buy a hybrid
What these articles always fail to mention is driving habbits. The mileage on any Hybid will suffer with jackrabbit starts and speeding.
Driving sensibly, keeping at the posted speed limit, and at least trying to time traffic signals in a city where "Syncronizing signals" seems to mean hitting every light red, I averaged about 40.5 mpg in my TCH over the summer.
In June, I drove it from Phoenix, AZ to Huntsville, TX and back, with a detour to Big Bend Nat'l Park. Keeping the cruise set at the posted spped limits, (mostly 75, but in west TX on I-10 the limit is 85. Stayed at about 80 there), I averaged 38.5 on the trip.
Now that the weather has cooled a bit, I am averaging 46 mpg in my Camry. My wife has a Prius, and has maintained around 54 - 57 mpg consistently for over a year.
I have averaged 51 mpg in the Camry for 50 miles through synchronized signals, low traffic volume and a 45 miles per hour speed limit.
