Default hybrid system comparison

I've gotten more quality info from this site. I haven't read every thread yet but I can't find an engineering slanted comparison of the Toyota and Honda hybrid systems. I get the idea that Toyota puts more into the electric motor. Am I on the right track? Where can I read about this ? Thanks.

Thanks but that was about style and comfort and handling....I am trying to understand the power flow in the two systems. From that article it's curious that the Civic has the smaller engine but still loses in MPG.

Also as an EE I can appreciate Toyota AC drives/motors (HiHy/TCH/Prius)superior advantages vs Honda DC drives/motors (HCH+HAH). Also the 4wd-i on my HiHy is in a class of its own.

I agree. It seems the system from GM would have to be called hybrid ultralite. Then the system of others with about 20 hp from the motor would be in the middle and Toyota's cars seem to be the "most hybrid". Of course they all run on gas until we can plug them in.

Was there any particular goal you were seeking?

Kicking the tires?
Intellectual curiosity?

We can point to you at a source for SAE papers about the Toyota system and Dept of Energy test results. These go way down into the weeds. Then there are some excellent, intermediate web pages that have more details. In short, we can drill down to photos of disassembled transaxles. Then there are the Prius ODB scanner data that shows various RPMs, current flows, e.t.c. You can spend a couple of days just reading engineering papers.

I would like to specifically see how energy flows between the components of the two systems as the car accelerates.

Its 14,000-watt electric motor works closely with the Vortec 5.3L V8 engine to boost city fuel economy by 2 MPG without a loss in power, compared to a conventional Silverado Classic with the same engine.(1) That’s gas mileage that comparable Triton and HEMI gas engines can’t touch(2)
14,000 / 746 = 18.8 horsepower....

The Silverado is a little "lighter" than IMA. I'm actually impressed that the GM is a true Flywheel Alternator Starter (not a BAS) and that it actually does regen and assist.

Any of the FAS or IMA systems are easy to understand. A single motor/generator provides assist when accelerating or going up hill. The battery is recharged when stopping or going down hill.

The toyota system is complicated. For more info check out Graham's page (click on understanding) :
