The Silverado is a little "lighter" than IMA. I'm actually impressed that the GM is a true Flywheel Alternator Starter (not a BAS) and that it actually does regen and assist.
Actually, I think FAS has the same horsepower as the *original* IMA. I'm pretty sure a HCH-1 has an 18-HP IMA, while the HCH-2 has 20 HP. Of course, GM's energy output is directed more for running power tools than pushing the car. Still, it seems to do a lot given the batteries it uses.

I can not help you on the IMA systems. But here is a good start for the Toyota systems:
http://www.ecrostech.com/prius/original/PriusFrames.htm

This page is one of the better introductions to the "Synergy Drive" systems. Then I would recommend reviewing:
http://www.robintree.com/prius/startup.html

Another rich source of Prius articles:
http://techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/cars/prius-linkfarm.html

This is a good Toyota source:
http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/tech/envi...hs2/index.html

Finally, here is some data I'd plotted to understand the energy flows:
http://home.hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/PnG.html

Once you get a chance to review them, lets go over what additional questions you might have. But I remain curious as to where you want to go with this information.

Thanks, Lakedude. That is a great site. Complete clear explanations. The diagram showing the two MGs was very eye-opening.

And thank you, Bob. One further question. Since Ford bought Toyota's technology, are there any sites that cover how similar the Escape system is to the Prius? I am very impressed with what the Prius has accomplished and wonder if the Ford is similar. Julian

They share the same architecture and my one test drive of a Ford Escape, front wheel drive, was very positive. I was easily able to get electric vehicle mode at speeds of 30 miles per hour. I don't know the limit but it was a nice, quiet, comfortable ride. It was my alternative to the Prius.
