Default What say you to this? (milage-comparo)

Not long ago I sold my Toyota Aygo, and replaced it with a VW Golf GT TSI. These two cars don't even begin to compare, however, in some aspects they are closer then one might think. Particularly if you digest the stats before you make a eco-judgment on the two.

#1 Toyota Aygo 1.0 vvt-i
Weight: 790Kg
Power: 68Hp
Torque: 93Nm
0-62: 14,3 sec.
Claimed mpg (EU mixed cycle): 0,46l/mil (51,1mpg)
Claimed emissions (EU mixed cycle): 109g/km

#2 Volkswagen Golf GT 1.4 TSI
Weight: 1271Kg
Power: 170Hp
Torque: 240Nm
0-62: 7,9 sec.
Claimed mpg (EU mixed cycle): 0,72l/mil (32.6mpg)
Claimed emissions (EU mixed cycle): 172g/km

Now on paper the GT has 57.7% higher Co2-emissions (and worse milage) compared to the tiny Aygo, now lets see how this pans out in actual reality, driven under similar conditions (not much has changed on my day-to-day driving habits).

#1 Toyota Aygo: 36.1mpg

#2 VW Golf GT TSI: 28.54mpg

As you can see, despite weighing 60% more and having 100Hp more, not to mention luggage- and passengerspace to spare, the difference in real-life has shrunk to a mere 26,7% difference between the two.

I'll throw in the milagedata from my Golf 2.0 TDI Sportline just for good measure too: 39.7mpg

my conclusion is that whoever now owns your Toyota is now getting better FE than either of your VWs.

I would say go back to the toyota... or better yet buy a hybrid and get the best of both worlds

Are you sure? That Aygo is getting Yaris mileage (with the 1.5 litre). Poor car must've had to work its *** off to move you and your stuff around with its tiny 1.0 litre.

Mods: EV mod, VVT-i emblem, sport pedals, OEM cargo mat, JDM Prius interior footwell lighting, Sylvania Silverstars 9003ST, DICE iPod kit, OEM all-weather mats, TomTom ONE v2, LED licence plate lights.

He he, which two worlds would that be?

Seriously, I won't be trading in the Golf anytime soon, but I might be tempted to also be keeping a new Fiat 500 on the side.

It's worth noting that I live at a ~200m elevation relative to work, and I have to drive that elevation 1,5 times both ways. This certainly hurts for the milage on the petrol-cars, in particular the Aygo, the TDI is the only one close to it's claimed consumtion in my experience. Had I lived somewhere flat, things might have looked different, the TDI would get even better milage than claimed, and the Aygo would probably do better to, though it's claimed mixed cycle I haven't even been able to match on long, calm trips.

Yeah the elevation change hurts mileage and it's noticeable with my Prius.

That new Fiat 500 looks kinda cool. Update us on that when it comes out!
