I've seen a few sources quoting 32 MPG, but all of them were very brief "first impressions" type reviews. The Road & Track test is the only truly thorough test I am aware of.

Also, one beaten-in Camry Hybrid I'd test-driven, along with countless others, had a tank average of 29.1 MPG and it had been driven very roughly by hordes of test-drivers. Driving it normally, or especially driving it "like a hybrid", will return a hell of a lot more than 32 MPG.

Its a big car with the a variant of the Prius technology. 32 or 33 looks spot on. WE will all know soon enough. It wont be anywehere near a Prius FWIW.

Of course. A Prius gets mid- to upper-40's for most people. I expect the TCH to get mid- to upper-30's, but we'll see. I hate speculating while I wait for the car to arrive.

Keep in mind that what I am weighing is the positive characteristics of the TCH vs. what might be much better mileage of the HCH. If reviews are showing a huge difference in mileage, the importance of that factor is greater for me.

I will not be considering other cars since time is a factor. The Prius is on a reported 6-12 month backlog according to one Toyota salesman.

Both cars' base models are very well equipped, and in fact they're almost identically equipped, though the Camry has SKS and it has more options available. So that at least makes it easy to compare the cars by price ($22700 vs $26480, or a $3780 difference).

$3780 sounds about right if you compare the MSRP of both non-navi base models. Is the 2006 tax credit still available with the Camry Hybrid?

Good point!

The list was different in 2005 when the gen 1 Civic Hybrid was the most mature (and part of the reason for choosing the 2005 HCH). Honda and Toyota both have good reputations but even they have bugs to work out in new models (for example the 62/63 mile reset issue).

The new HCH has some truely major advances over the 2005 version. Major. If the worst thing to happen is a software fixable trip odometer reset issue, then its a whopping success. ( which it is).

I doubt the 2007 Toyota will have too many bugs either. When it comes to car design Honda and Toyota are tops on their bread and butter cars. Camry is a major toyota lone, and civic is Honda.

These cars dont and wont have major flaws. The Prius of course, shut down on the highway in an earlier in carnation. Now that was really a new model line back then. Big difference!

Really? It looks like mostly a style change and the elimination of the manual option. What is the "major" advance of the HCH2? The gen 1 CVT gets 45.8 while the gen 2 gets 46.6 according to our database. The gen 1 MT gets 48.3. I'm not seeing the "major" improvement. Of course the gen 2 is really cute and it does have a bit more power but they won't sell me one till they offer it in a manual.
