I will vote the Prius wins hands-down.
I drove the HCHII and it seemed a bit doggish both off the line and passing on the highway (50
MPH to 70
MPH). My Prius will really go off the line and is completely amazing on passing power.
REALLY disliked the engine start-up EVERY time my foot came off the brake...even moving a foot ahead. Can't say it had the same "future of automotive technology" under the hood that my Prius does. Friction belts for a drive system? Honda's CVT uses 2 pulleys with a metal belt as the pulley(s) change diameter. Nope, i like the constant mesh of the Prius power-split device (similar to a differential of a rear-wheel drive vehicle)
On average will see 50 MPG on longer trips, about the same or lower in city (urban). Depends on too many factors...YMMV, but really, everyone's view is with an opinion.
OVERALL, the Prius is my winner with the versatile hatch (fit a fullsize wheelbarrow and longish lumber in a HCHII, or large bulky items?) , great economy in both city and highway, can run EV for short periods (TRUE EV, engine NOT spinning), and is quick and nimble and comfortable.
