Question Prius or Camry

I own a Prius. A fine car. But I have an opportunity to trade for a Camry hybrid at a fair price. I bought my first Camry in 1984 and it is my favorite.
Now I'm torn: Stay with the Prius or go back to my first love: Camry.
Your opinion appreciated.

Do you want MAX MAX MAX gas mileage and the convenience of a hatchback? If so, stay with the Prius.

If you want a larger, more refined, more stylish (in the general sense), more powerful yet less efficient, great-reputation family car, then go with the Camry Hybrid.

Either way, good choice....

I was in a similar situation as you last Nov when the TCH had been announced. After having Camry's since 1989 I was very very pleased by them and I absolutely love the look and features of this new Generation.

However, normally it's just me in the vehicle for my 150 mi/day commute and while both vehicles are about the same price the Prius is just that much more fuel efficient. I went with the Prius - but I still look at the TCH's everyday longingly.

In two years the new Prius will be out. Hold off for that, maybe?

I passed on the Camry hybrid. I was tempted. The Prius still wins out.

On the decision making front, it would probably benefit you to look at what you want vs. what you need. Is your Prius deficient in any way, or is it simply not the latest and greatest from Toyota? More importantly, consinder why you bought the Prius in the first place. The fuel economy? If so, are you willing to take a substantial hit in FE? It may not matter much right now but consider your situation the next time fuel costs increase. How much more money will it cost yoou at $3 per? How about $4, which will be here eventually. Don't get me wrong, the TCH is far and away the best FE vehicle in its class. But its cababilities simply don't match the Prius that you already have.

Just consider the whole equation before you get carried away.

I say get the Camry. You can still achieve 40 mpg in it.

The OP's mileage log says he's getting 45.0mpg out of the Prius, which puts him a little lower than average for the vehicle. That would put him in the 35mpg range with a Camry if you assume they behave about the same (which they should).

I agree with brick's mileage estimate, based on my own experience.

I feel the Prius is better if fuel efficiency, cost, ease of parking*, or storage space are prime requirements.

The Camry Hybrid is better if range, speed, or comfort are more important. Also the Prius' fixed-height seats are very bad if you're short.

Toyota designed the cars well, in that they do not really compete with each other. They each have their own place.

*The Camry is longer than the Prius with a wider turning radius, so it's more annoying to park.

I have been able to acquire both the Prius and the Camry hybrid. The Camry is a bit more comfortable when traveling. The Prius sips fuel, so it is my commute car. Unless you have a huge daily commute, the $ savings on better gas mileage pales in comparison with depreciation, insurance, and maintenance. You are just going to make your own decision on this.
