I don't think there will be much difference between the 2 unless you drive a lot of bumper to bumper traffic. But I guess time will tell. Lets see when there are more HCHII datapoints that are useful.
Thanks for the extra figures.

The two are really so close that for all intents and purposes they are equal. Driving style and driving conditions are probably going to have a bigger impact on your fuel economy than which car you choose. Based on such similar fuel economy, I would probably base a buying decision off of other factors, like how much you like the look and feel of each car.

Is the new HCH larger than the old version, or does the Prius still have a larger size (dis)advantage on it?

The HCH is still a compact car and the Prius is a midsize. I drove both before making my decision, they are both really nice cars, but really different, so it is going to depend on what you need or like. I choose the Prius and it is still the most fun to drive car I have ever had, and I have used it to carry lumber and even a full size door and frame in the hatchback, I couldn't have done that with the HCH, but Both cars are the best of their catagory. The HCH is a lot easier to get the EPA milage, but if you work a little at learning to drive different, the Prius can get some incredable numbers.

I own a HCHII which I purchased three months ago.

I routinely drive 75--80 miles per hour on they highways here in NC, which are typically a bit hilly, and certainly not totally flat. I usually get 40-45 mpg even at those speeds, using the "pump and glide" method (I don't use cruise control because of the uneven terrain).

So, I can't complain about my gas mileage, even though I know it would be better if I kept my speeds below 70.
