I had exactly the same problem with all of my previous cars, incl. one Ford Tempo (yechh), and two Saturn SL2s. I always assumed that was normal.

In my old car, I used to open the driver's window, and the back window on the passenger side, to create a cross-flow and clear out the hot air. I did that once in the Camry going down the highway, and my ears just about exploded. Needless to say, I don't do it anymore.

Every 4 door vehicle I've owned has done this to some extent, and every car forum I've frequented has this thread and one arguing about regular or synthetic oil.

My life is in balance now.

Cars are designed to have the windows UP. Any side effects from having them down is just toooo bad

i get the same thing with my civic......kind of a wind tunnel effect that makes my ears hurt. i make sure i have them open all the way around to counteract the feeling.

Our RX300 is all but undriveable with the rear windows down due to this effect. At any speed above 30, it will cause physical pain and I assume will blow something out at greater speed.

Ah THAT's my problem! Mentally reviewing my car history.... nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, yes! First time I have ever owned a four door car!

I have been trying various window combinations but I don't notice any ear pain unless I have the stereo ah up too loud... Now, that I know what is going on, I won't have to wonder if there is something wrong with my new car.

And Jay-Man 2 Congrats on having your life in balance!

Hah! It always amazes me (I don't know why) that it usually turns out to be the too obvious things that lead to the question in the first place. In your case, never experiencing the (to me, normal) rear window thump - because you never had rear windows! Too funny.
