Anyone who pays MSRP and doc fees for a TCH is NOT doing their homework!

I got mine from Fitzmall at msrp MINUS $699.00 and NOooooo doc fees. (out of state buy)

Some of us are not going to be running hundreds of miles away from home to purchase a car.

So I do not know where you guys got your prices from.
I am sort of shocked, that my 3 week old car has dropped by $8,000.00

I agree that the TMV is way off, even in what I imagine is a high-demand area like mine.

I called and emailed ten area dealers (SF Bay Area), and every single one quoted me MSRP right off the bat. While most were unwilling to budge, a couple offered to lower the price, and we ended up paying $150 under MSRP with no trade-in.

I didn't realize they started showing "used" prices on current year cars. Private party prices never exceed the invoice prices for the dealer. Being a current year car you can beat the $26,000 listed for a loaded TCH. $5,000 depreciation is pretty much typical of any car you look at. The key is DON'T trade or sell the first year, you'll aways lose.

I traded my 350Z after 1 year and took a hit on it. However two years later the trade in price was still at what I got. You can't win looking at 1 year old values.

Trade in Values (as opposed to private party values) are there for showing what people get on trade, usually with a lot of poor deals thrown in. There are also other factors (you have to include the condition, milage and options) that make the base value go up from the chart. I usually expect (and do) to get somewhere between trade (excellent condition) to Private party against a reasonable discount on the new vehicle.


Bottom line my 30,589 TCH I would expect to get on trade in 1 year 26,000, 2 years 24,000 and 3 years 22,000. Considering after tax breaks in three years I have only paid $24,000 + loan interest for the vehicle I consider that a good automotive purchase.

EVERYTHING depreciates the first year, but if you don't trade the first year it doesn't matter. The second and thirs year depreciation is considerably less. The more expensive the car the worse it is. The 04 EXPO I traded was $48,000 MSRP (I got a huge discount) but only had a trade value of $22,500 after 2 model years.

Interestingly the residual on a 1 yr TCH lease is 95%.
The sales tax is a killer though.

One advantage I see (for a dealer) on a lease (I've never leased, I'm no expert) is that when the car gets turned in to the dealer it gets sold starting at a "RETAIL" price.

As a consumer people expect me to sell mine at Private Party prices as a max, even though it still has a warranty and is just as good as the one on a dealers lot. Doesn't make sense on cars with a lot of warranty. It's arip off basically when they will sell a new car at invoice, but they want your used car at $5000 to $8000 under what they pan to price it at. If they had to warrant the car I can understand markups, but they do this on 1 year old cars where they have no risk. All they have to do is clean it up and pay interest on the bank loan. If you have a really clean car and a model that is in demand they will pay more. They make more money on the clean used cars than they do on the new ones.

I traded in my '04 Prius with 8500 (not 85k) miles on it.
They gave me what I paid for it (MSRP) in trade and knocked
$500 off of MSRP on the TCH along with a 3rd Smart Key Fob.
I tracked the car on the lot and they sold it in 2 days for
$2000 more than the trade-in. In other words $2000 more than
it's MSRP when new. Of course the MSRP on an equivalent
'06 Prius is higher. The selling point on the my used Prius is
it was available NOW and not 3 to 6 months down the road.
It's all "supply and demand" as with everything.
The $2600 tax credit made my upgrade to the TCH almost free.
