Default failed weld between exhaust manifold and cat/converter

The problem:

My 07 Camry Hybrid suddenly sounds like a Honda Punk-Mobile that any high school student would love to cruise with.

The diagnosis by a Toyota Dealership Mechanic:

A weld has failed somewhere between the engine exhaust manifold and the expensive bits of the exhaust catalytic converter.

The Solution:

The Toyota dealership said that they could fix the problem by replacing parts but with labor it would cost $ 1,500.

However, when I asked, I could probably take it in to a muffler shop and have it all welded back together for a tenth of that cost.

So I am going to ask my local dealership to recommend a good muffler/exhaust place.

I will keep you all updated on my progress.

Update...

Just learned that Toyota and Honda are known for welding catalytic converters right to the exhaust manifold outlet.

even if you go this route:
http://www.dealerdirectparts.com/Pro...233-CAMRY-HY-4

it's still 50% dealership cost.

everyone needs to keep in mind that there's something too cheap about that price.

but, for the purpose of this thread, i need to highlite few points:

1. cat is not part of exhaust manifold; it is on some Camrys, not on this one though
2. it appears to be a simple bolt on replacement that can be done off jackstands
3. even if the end user does not have skill/tools. or desire to DIY this, it is wise to buy the part and have it swapped out at, say, same Meineke
4. I had weld jobs done before by Meineke. I still say that vehicle needs to be inspected by a pro muffler shop, like Meineke, and possible repair discussed with them. Hoping for a forum to provide medicine to fix it is non-realistic.

Go to rockauto.com, check the part below. look for shops near you that could install this part for you if you're not a DIY. find another dealer/mechanic looks like the dealer mechanic is just throwing parts at you. Looks like an easy job for a DIY.
