I had a similar problem with the nav system in my Escape. It sent me off a well-marked highway in Northern Alabama onto a back road where it then informed me that it "had no mapping for that area. Proceed with caution."
That scared the %$#@ out of me, as I was 2,000 miles from home. That is when the paper map for backup is a good thing!!

Yes, an entire navigation head unit is about $2900. One source is:

It takes less than an hour to R&R, and not much in the way of skill.

The thing that I'm not sure of is if it might need some computer work after the mechanical installation is done. I rather doubt it, but I cant say for sure.
