Default old topic (trunk lid found open)

This morning my wife and I were going out and when we entered the garage we found the trunk lid open again. It was no accident, we did not have the keys, we were going to take my truck.

Darn, I hope this doesn't happen since my car is parked outside and kids run around here and steal things....

You mention that this is an old topic...is this a common occurrence? I hadn't seen any threads on this topic, although I am relatively new here.

Link please?
I'll assume you are 100% sure the passenger compartment doors were all locked?
If someone can gain access to the passenger compartment then opening the
trunk or gas filler door is just a matter of lifting a lever or pressing a button.

I don't think anyone can claim it's a common occurrence. Perhaps a few here have seen it happen. I've had mine 18+ months and never seen this once.

Ok...this just happened to me today...and it was RAINING A LOT!!! I am very mad and I really hope it doesn't happen again. I don't have a garage and park on the street. I am going to wake up and find my car jacked or trashed.

Ok that was excessive....

Did you contact the dealer? Maybe there is a 'silent recall'?

The trunk-release button on the remote (smart key) fob is not inset. It is easy to press that button unintentionally, even while the key fob is in your pocket. The remote has enough range that you can unlock your doors or open your trunk from inside your house.

I doubt they will recall the smart key fobs to replace them with new fobs.

It is possible to secure the trunk lid using the brass key. They call that a luggage security feature. See page 54 in the 2008 owners manual. If you do that, however, the only way to open the trunk is with the brass key. That can be inconvenient.

Probably the best thing to do is just to be aware that the buttons on the remote can work from inside the house, and refrain from pushing them when you don't want to open the car. If you are worried, you might want to put a piece of tape, or some other cover, over the trunk-release button to prevent accidents.

Maybe someone will make a neoprene or leather case for this key fob, with some extra protection for that button.
