I still believe sales tax is dictated within the municipality/ county you are in. However, vehicle sales tax is different than sales tax. In your case, Rockford has a sales of 8.25%, but its vehicle tax is still 6.25%. {I actually commute between Rockford, schaumburg, gurnee, (alot of driving, hence my need for a car with great FE ) and the sales tax hike in rockford took me by suprise in april}.

I actually tried Anderson on State, and it was MSRP. Brian Bemis within their quote told me to purchase from them because "everyone is selling at MSRP, but we have the lowest taxes." I tried using this as leverage in negotiations with other dealers.

They all shut me down, giving me the info I gave you.

Pauly in Crystal Lake was able to give me 1500 over invoice, so I hope to have gotten a decent price . Alas I still will pay the 7.00% rate no matter where I purchased.

However, who knows? Any one else care to clarify.

Unfortunately there isn't a stealership in Rockford I would consider dealing with.

MSRP on our model is $28430 (option B - moonroof package.) We are paying $26424 which I think is about $800 over invoice? And we are saving $200 on the sales tax (6.25% vs. 7%.) All I know is we are happy with the deal. Now if it would just get here!!

That would be interesting if a dealership in Rockford would collect extra taxes for a different county. Or if Pauly Toyota would forego collecting McHenry County's 0.75% vehicle tax surcharge from me because I don't live there.

I just assumed that the state governments had a reciprocal agreement to get their money but the counties were left out in the cold. I could be wrong though.

So out of curiosity, it sounds like you have no cap on sales tax for automobiles? Also, do you pay property taxes on vehicles?

FWIW, we have similar variances in sales tax rates in my state, but there is a $300 cap on vehicles. On the other hand we pay about 2.5% of value a year in property tax with no cap.

Also, given the low volume of TCH sales, due most likely to supply. It looks like you got a really good deal.

No property tax on vehicles here in Illinois (yet). Just the sales tax of 6.25% plus whatever the individual counties want to tack on.

How long did they say the wait would be? I had to wait 3 weeks for mine when I ordered it mid May.
